8 month old wakes up screaming in night

But why?

She is absolutely beside herself and ends up becoming exhausted from actually screaming and goes back to sleep (on me usually after comforting her)

It’s been happening on and off for the past 2 - 3 weeks and we can’t understand it.

She falls asleep in her cot, has prescribed medication for her reflux and is winded properly

She gets herself so upset to the point of going red, tears and either being sick or hyperventilating. Normally a very happy chatty lively baby

Has anyone else experienced this? If so did you find out why or what could help?

Could she be teething?

My 11 month DD is currently cutting her top two teeth and woke up screaming (not like her at all) the other night. After some Calpol, a bottle and a cuddle, she settled back down.

Probably reflux
Does she have a wedge (eg wedgehog)?
It helped DS with his reflux pain at night

We went through this around the same time. In our case it was definitely teething, anbesol liquid worked best as it numbs straight away, followed by a teething powder. The screaming is unsettling though.

No advice. But DS (18 months) occasionally does this, no rhyme nor reason to it, but when it happens he is almost impossible to settle for a good 10 minutes, and almost seems like he doesn’t realise we are there even when we pick him up! I was starting to think it was nightmares or similar, and then waking up a bit disoriented from it? He did start doing it around 8 months, it will happen maybe a few nights in close succession and then won’t happen again for weeks/months

TeabagTelepathy · 01/12/2018 11:41

She’s got her two bottom teeth, maybe her top ones now?

We elevate one end of her cot abc keep her upright after feeds if she falls asleep

Thank you for your responses x

@SilverbytheSea we are having the exact same problem! Her eyes look at you but it’s like she’s terrified! I thought something like nightmares maybe, sorry your DS has this too, but interesting to know it happens

Oh god, we've had this 5 days solid, he's always been very good at sleeping, normally right through, but he's started screaming in his sleep and waking 2 hours after being put to bed, it's super weird. I've put it down to teething! This is the first night I've given him teething gel and some paracetamol to ease the 'pain if there is any. At first I thought it was nightmares ...

TeabagTelepathy · 01/12/2018 23:06

@MisterTea oh no you must be exhausted! Our lo goes to bed slightly later than we would like ideally, but normally sleeps through til 7.30 but it sounds very similar, a couple of hours after going to sleep she does it.

I’ve tried teething gel and calpol but I wonder why it doesn’t bother them this much in the day?

Sounds like reflux. My daughter had this but it turned out to be a dairy & egg allergy that was aggravating the reflux.

MisterTea · 01/12/2018 23:11

Rarely he screams , he just moans and whinges loudly , not quite a cry but enough to stir him. Tonight I have been ignoring him and he seems to be drifting off after 20 mins of continuous moaning. If I tries comforting him I'd wake him up and I'm terrified that if I feed him every time he wakes I'll get him in to a bad habit :/ think I'll whack my earplugs in and get dh to prod me if he properly cries. Yeah, from tiny he's been doing 6/7 till 7/8 , just this past week or so ....

Is it too early for night terrors? Worth looking into

SpoonBlender · 01/12/2018 23:19

Teeth or guts. It's always teeth or guts. Poor little mites haven't got any recourse apart from screaming.

Wearing though, isn't it?

MulledwineMayhem · 02/12/2018 01:42

It must be horrible for them wish there was more I could do, she did a massive fart last time so I think you are right with the teeth or guts thing!

Sorry for the Christmas name change Grin

SheisMammyof2 · 02/12/2018 01:51

Possibly night terrors.. DS started having these at 6 months.. he'd be screaming with his eyes open, but he wasn't awake. The only way to calm him was to properly wake him up and then once he calmed down put him back to sleep.

Foggymist · 02/12/2018 03:32

Ear infection?

blackcat86 · 02/12/2018 03:45

Could it be the room temp? DD is younger at 3.5weeks but started randomly crying at night when still asleep (a full blown distressed, I'm being tortured cry). The sleep programme I use offers online support and they suggested that as the night goes on she may be getting cold. We sleep in a loft conversion so as it's quite warn I had her in the lower tog gro bag (in line with gro bag guidance) but I switched to a higher one, and popped the heating on for a bit before we came to bed. It sorted out the problem.

MulledwineMayhem · 02/12/2018 05:35

Thank you so much, really helpful suggestions. She’s had her ears checked recently and we have a groegg for room temp
