Is it ok for my five month old to have all his naps in the buggy?

For a good few months DS (five months) has taken all his naps in his pram, in our hallway, pushed back and forth for a few minutes until he falls asleep and then left still. When he was in the carrycot that felt like the perfect solution - nice and close as SIDS guidelines suggest, but essentially in a cot. But he's outgrown the carrycot and is in the pram bit now. For a few days I put him in the cot but that was a disaster - so hard to settle him (and required endless rocking, which was really hurting my back) and he kept waking up crying after 10 minutes and not going back to sleep no matter what I did and so was really overtired. So we went back to the pram, but I feel so guilty about it. On days like today where we're going into town later it means he can spend nearly five hours (three hours of naps, two out and about) in his pram in a day. That's far too much, isn't it? It can't be good for his back? The seat is reclined back as far as it will go but that still means he isn't lying completely flat - it's more like a car seat angle. And that would be far too long for him to be in a car seat. Do I need to go back to the cot even if it means him not napping well and not getting much sleep?

It's ok, I'll add it to the long list of things people have told me are 'rods for my own back' - some of which (napping only in the sling, feeding hourly, feeding to sleep at night) he's already outgrown of his own volition. Every time I've tried to get rid of one of these 'rods' it's failed and made us both miserable in the process, so I've decided I'm going with his flow for now.

I wasn't for a second saying you've made a rod for your own back! If it's working for you then great but as the mother of a 3 year old who still doesn't sleep I'm always desperate to help anyone else avoid that!!! Sorry if I caused any upset.

My 11 month old DD naps twice a day in her pram, which is in the hallway, and sleeps perfectly well (7pm-6am) in her cot.

I think when it comes to babies, as long as it's working and it's safe, just let it be. Lol

My dc2 had naps exactly the same as your dc from 0-12m. At 1yr I started putting him in his cot for naps - not a problem at all. Now at nearly 5 he’s the best sleeper of all my dc, he only dropped his daytime nap this year!

My first dc always slept in the buggy for naps. As long as yours goes down ok in a cot overnight (or bed if you're co sleeping etc) and you're ok with all weather naps just carry on as you are. Naps have a shelf life so it's not like you'll have to do it forever!

sounds like a great solution. perhaps gradually reduce the rocking over time so he learns to settle without the pushing so transition to cot is easier when you want to.

personally a buggy napping child is handy, better than being tied to the house like we are.
