Any fail safe recipes you've used for a very very fussy baby?

I am finding it very difficult to find things my one year will eat. I'm slightly pulling my hair out. My elder son was a dream to wean and we have pushed forward with BLW with both of them. My daughter will try everything but unless it's fruit she will spit it out. We have the BLW cookbook and I've now tried every recipe as well as all the obvious. Does anyone have anything new I could try? Something that's worked for your fussy eater?

If she’s spitting everything out, what’s she actually surviving on? Smile

She has milk - the only thing she really loves is her milk

How much milk would you say she’s having in a day? Just for reference, if she’s not BF she should be having 300 ml of full fat cow’s milk a day. Anymore than this, and it may affect her appetite Smile

Could be sensory issues. I blended anything they wouldn't eat, into sauces they liked. I still do that with soup. Ds1 would vomit during dinner until the age of about three. He has sensory issues. I didn't know that he was different to others but I wish I'd known about sensory disorder as it would have explained a lot and I'd have had some support.

@JiltedJohnsJulie I'm not sure how much she's having but I know that it is definitely more than she should be - the health visitor has asked us to continue feeding on demand because her appetite for solid food is so poor - it's a bit of a vicious circle! Thank you though for mentioning the amount of milk - definitely confirms what I know!

@starlight45 oh wow - interesting - do sensory issues manifest in other ways too? Do you happen to know of a good place I could read up on this?

Home made pizza ? Always good to whack a five a day on x

My DS had a sweet tooth (and still does!). He liked sweetcorn fritters, sweet potato wedges, pies when they were topped with sweet potato mash, sweet potato fish cakes etc..
If she likes milk, could you try her with a very milky porridge or very milky scrambled eggs?

WeSaluteYou · 30/11/2018 07:18

I had a one year old who would only eat yoghurt. Things changed around 15 months - we just kept offering bits with every new and eventually they stopped going on the floor and started going in her mouth. It was frustrating because previously she had eaten well but we got there in the end

JiltedJohnsJulie · 30/11/2018 16:04

Are you Bfing Ralph? If so, try offering the solids before the bf. If you’re giving cow’s milk, I’d be tempted to ask the HV why she’s said that asthenosphere NHS recommend 300 ml of full fat cow’s milk a day.

If you’re giving bottles, I’d drop the daytime ones and give the bedtime one only. If she asks for milk at any other time, give it in a beaker with some solid food.

If she really is having trouble chewing the food, it might be worth getting her a check up at the dentist. Has she ever been checked for Tongue Tie too?

Ralphstar · 30/11/2018 21:00

@Ricekrispie22 thank you - amazing suggestions - I think a big issue is texture - tried milky porridge on your suggestion this morning but she grimaces like I'm feeding her lemons and then spits it out...sigh

@WeSaluteYou thank you - that's reassuring that it might come right in the end 🤞

@JiltedJohnsJulie thank you so much for replying again - I think the HV is concerned that if we don't continue feeding on demand then my daughter may become undernourished - I have tried so hard to restrict milk feeds but she refuses to consume anything at all - her sleep is so appalling - if I don't give her milk, she cries and cries and gets herself so worked up that she's sick - I have still persevered but she will just not eat anything - I find that if she's calm and well fed milk wise then her eating of solid food is a little better. Interesting that you mention tongue tie - she was diagnosed with posterior tongue tie but because it didn't seem to be affecting BF we didn't pursue it ... 🤔

I guessed as much. My DS was tongue tied, although it wasn’t picked up till he was much, much older.

I really, really would suggest that you look into getting it divided. My DS wouldn’t eat solids, well on very smooth purees, for a long time. Didn’t sleep through for years and had SLT until he was about 10.

Would she eat smooth purees? Banana-Cado is quite calorific Smile

Ralphstar · 30/11/2018 21:57

@JiltedJohnsJulie ah so interesting - my son was also tongue tied but had his separated at 9 weeks old. Do you happen to know who I would contact and speak to about possible TT and related eating issues?
Thank you so much again

There are details of some tt Practioners here. Even if it sounds daunting, or expensive can I just add thstvDS didn’t sleep through the night until he was FIVE Thanks

Ralphstar · 01/12/2018 10:05

@JiltedJohnsJulie My son - who is almost 8 - still doesn't sleep through the night - hence the 6.5 year age gap between our kiddos 😂😭 thank you so much again!

Banana pancakes never get refused in my house - mash a ripe banana, mix in one egg, pour little dollops into an oiled pan and cook for 2 or 3 minutes each side.
Taste very sweet but you’re getting a good amount of protein in!

No experience of TT, I hope you get the help you need x

Ralphstar · 04/12/2018 20:24

@Blondemother thank you so much! So good to have a variation I can try - will give it a go tomorrow 🤞🤞🤞 Thank you!
