Dry at night?

Inspired by another thread...

When / how do you go dry at night? DD has been potty trained now for several months - the occasional accident but generally v good. No nappy for naps etc... but nowhere near dry at night. Occasionally she’ll get up in the morning with a dry nappy and do a huge wee but otherwise - v wet still.

Is she just not ready? When should we try? I should add I’m expecting #2 in 10 weeks so there’s a big change coming. Is this something she will come to on her own?

Advice / thoughts appreciated. She hates being woken up in the night so taking her to do a wee in the middle of the night would incite nuclear meltdown!

Night time dryness is hormonal, so it's not something you can teach as such. As ai understand it, until the child is about 7, if they're still wet at night, that is considered normal. Most children however go dry between 3-5 (IME).

Personally, I think waking the child or a wee only makes sense if he/she would otherwise wake up themselves at 3am needing a wee. A child who would just wee in their nappy later, may as well just stay in their nappy. DD dropped her nappy at night about 2 weeks after being potty trained. I tried to convince her to keep it, but she would just wake up and insist on being taken to the toilet, whether she was wearing it or not. So we woke her for ages and still do sometimes.

Incidentally, DD was late to potty training - almost 3. But super speedy for night training. While DS potty trained originally at about 2 and 4 months but was in a night nappy until he was about 3.5. And I considered that quite early as most of my friends' dc were still wearing night nappies until they were at least 4 and quite a few well into the first few years of school. My DNeice was 6 before she stopped wearing one at night.

Thanks that’s v helpful. She’s not 3 till v end of Jan and potty trained and in knickers since sept - v quick to it. Will try not to worry too much then! She doesn’t wake overnight unless she’s ill.

My DD is just 5 and still in pull ups at night - there would be no point in me doing the take to the toilet thing as her pull up is full to bursting in the morning, so shes definitely doing more than one! And it doesn't make a difference if she goes before bed either.
My DS is 3.5 and is also still not ready. Full pull ups in the morning.
Both potty trained in 2-3 days at around 2yrs 9months with only a handful of accidents between them since training.
I'm in no rush, I know they'll get there when they're ready - it's not an issue for them so we'll go with the flow. IF either starts worrying about it or getting upset that they want to get rid of pull ups, then we'll do something more proactive about it.

My DS was night dry a couple of weeks after day training. He was nearly 3 though. We kept pull ups overnight for a while, but he’d cry for the toilet at 3am and obviously we didn’t want to discourage him using it. We now take him to pee when we go to bed around 11, which seems to work well and he doesn’t wake in the night anymore.

He’s 3.5 now. Many of his friends are still in pull ups overnight which is normal. I was throwing away a dry pull up every morning so he just did it naturally.

Watching with interest as my just turned 4 year old seems to have a dry pull up every morning now, but a bit afraid to take the plunge!

Caterina99 · 28/11/2018 23:57

Jerkkneed - we definitely left it longer than needed, but he was happy enough in pull ups and we were going on holiday. We just took them away one night when we got home, as they were consistently dry and he’s never had an accident since (been about 2 months now)

Must admit it’s defintely nice having one less thing to buy, but it certainly wouldn’t have been an issue if he’d been wearing them at night for another year or longer!

@Caterina99 that's good to know.

Another dry pull up today but we are moving house in a couple of weeks so thinking I might leave it until I'm the new house as it might set him back maybe.

Caterina99 · 29/11/2018 13:00

Yes I’d definitely wait til after you’ve moved house. If it’s not bothering anyone then just wait til things have calmed down. Last thing you need is to be changing bed sheets amongst all the moving chaos

DS was dry at night at 22m - he just started waking up dry and after 5 night or so we took the nappy off and that was it.

DD had a few dry nights here and there, I waited for several dry nights in a row but it just never happened. I had a feeling she just got comfortable weeing into her nappy and couldn't be bothered with waiting to be put on potty. So at 2.4 during heatwave we took it off. She wet the bed the first 2 nights and has been dry ever since.
