Hand foot and mouth progression

DD's nursery room has had 4 cases of hfm confirmed. She's been sent home today with what looks like blisters around her mouth and one tiny one on her hand. I think she is teething (13mo and only 2 teeth) and is dribbling like a tap. I think the spots round her mouth is a dribble rash and I'm trying to keep it dry. She also has a touch of nappy rash which she got with the last teething bout.

The Dr isn't sure if its hfm as she's had no fever, no blisters in her mouth and is eating drinking as normal, which apparently goes against the typical presentation.

Has anyone's DC had hfm that didn't progress in the typical way? How long do blisters take to appear/how quickly do they get worse? She's not been in since Thursday, and is no worse (possibly better) than this morning.

TIA

My 1 year old had hfm last week. Friday she had a temp (38/39), Sat she had blisters on her tongue and spots around her moth and knees. She had on/off temp sat and Sunday but by Sunday evening the blisters and spots around the mouth had gone and I've just seen some of the spots around the knee are now small scabs. From what I'd read I thought she'd had more spots/blisters and be ill for longer but she seems to have gotten off lightly.

WooYa · 26/11/2018 20:08

First spots appeared on DSs mouth and bum on Saturday morning, on Sunday a few more appeared then it spread onto his hands. Over the course of today the spots have spread across his knees and into his mouth. Luckily they are bothering him.

Sorry but sounds like HFM. We just had it - no ulcers, no fever. Took about 24 hours for spots to come in after first signs - face, arms, feet and bum. Plus problems sleeping. Otherwise was ok. All fine after a few days and spots gone in a week.

Bobbiepin · 26/11/2018 21:08

Hmmmm so it seems as though we'll know tomorrow. Thanks everyone. Am I right in thinking its the mouth ulcers that cause the most distress? Otherwise the rest is irritating at worst?

Be prepared that you may catch it too. I hadn’t even realised HFM was a thing, and then didn’t realise adults got it. I felt absolutely rough, though DS was fine. Never got mouth blisters thankfully

craftymum01 · 26/11/2018 21:14

My DS had an awful bought last year. What annoyed him was it was in his throat. Would only tolerate frozen yogurt for about three days. Took two weeks for the blisters on his face to disappear but he has a red chin for weeks afterwards

Bobbiepin · 26/11/2018 21:23

I've been really ill recently and I don't think I'd cope if I caught it too. I'm being careful about washing my hands and not doing things like licking her spoon or holding her dummy in my mouth. Hopefully that'll be enough saying that obviously means it won't be

My 11 month old had it last week. She was ill the weekend before and off her food and unsettled at night with a slightly higher temp. Had a couple of spots round her mouth but I just thought they were from dribble then on the Monday she woke up with spots on her wrists, just small ones like a rash. Then later that day got them up her legs and bum. Didn't have any in her mouth as far as I could tell. They all clearer by the end of the week. I have a 3 year old and she didn't get it and don't think I have either. Hopefully won't come out in a few days....

Bobbiepin · 27/11/2018 18:32

That doesn't sound like DD at all. She's got no new spots and the ones on her face look a bit less red. No fever, still eating and displaying every teething symptom known to man. I think I'll call the Drs again tomorrow if there's no change.

Mine had similar. Sometimes a few weeks later some or all finger and foot nails also fall off. Not fun.

crosser62 · 27/11/2018 18:41

Took a couple of days for spots to come out.
Then the pain, it’s described as a burning or scalded feeling on palms of hands an souls of feet.
My ds was really really distressed and upset with the pain. Rubbing his hands on any surface he could find.
Then a really strange thing happened after 4/5 weeks, every single finger and toe nail fell off!!
Apparently very common with hfm.
All grew back absolutely fine but bizarre!

ILiveForNachos · 27/11/2018 18:41

We only realised DD had it once husband got it really badly. I’d been away with work and realised when I got back she’d had it. She had 3 blisters on her face near her mouth and one on her ear and a couple of spots on her body but not much. She was eating but less but was waking up loads in the night and had an on/off low grade temperature.

Bobbiepin · 27/11/2018 19:05

Nails falling off? What the actual fuck?? Christ, never heard of that. Sleeping fine, no obvious discomfort, she gets ratty when she's not slept but that's no different to normal, no temp. The only thing I know is that I know nothing!!!

My DD had it a few months back, utterly horrendous she’s 16 months & she’s never been so poorly. It started out (oddly) with spots on her back & then just really grumpy/clingy. She was still eating/drinking. In fact she ate/drank the whole way through. Took her to the doctors who found blisters in her mouth, over the next few days they appeared all round the outside of her mouth, bum, hands, feet you name it... & now, 4 of her finger nails have fallen off Sad I’m pregnant & by the grace of god didn’t catch it! I think my DD had it quite badly comparing to other friends babies but it’s really bloody nasty & so contagious! Hope you’re DC doesn’t have it Op!

Bobbiepin · 28/11/2018 10:27

That's so lucky you didn't catch it. Your poor DD, it sounds awful.

The spots around DD's mouth are continually looking better so we're back to the doctors in an hour.

Bobbiepin · 28/11/2018 12:10

The wonderful doctor agrees the spots are from her dribble and the dummy causing irritation and it's unlikely to be hfm. Thank you so much for your replies and educating me so much. I'll be fully prepared for the future.

DD had it when she was about 14 months and wasn't ill with it at all. A few spots on her hands, one on her face and loads on her bum - which is apparently a thing! She was her usual self though. We knew it was HFM as it was going round and there was no other obvious reason for the spots she did have. Also nursery didn't exclude for it unless they were actually poorly.

DH and I both got it, and only realised later that that's what our weird synchronised little sore spots in our mouth must have been afterwards. It was very mild for all of us.

LearningToDrive · 30/11/2018 07:58

DS recently had it for the first time. He had a high fever and was very distressed when we tried to give him food.

I wasn't until DH caught it off him that what poor DS must have gone through could be articulated - painful throat and mouth ulcers. DH couldn't eat anything for days and was miserable. Both got a mild rash that scabbed after a few days.

Clarebell81 · 30/11/2018 16:21

Oh its the worst...my son got it the worst spots appeared in a day on hands and feet...took 2 weeks to go and then a further 3 weeks for skin on his hands and feet to stop sheding away.

I got it as well...throat was awful and unbearable pain on hands and feet...so sorry for you but you'll get through it xx

Bobbiepin · 30/11/2018 16:48

Thanks for your replies, I really feel for you all and your DC. DD's face is clearing up nicely, I'd expect it to be gone by Monday. Judging by the stories you've all told I'm sure it's not hfm and is dribble irritation. I'll have to be more careful about keeping her face dry when she's teething.
