Silent Reflux- Renatidine not working- what next?

Just that really. We were proscribed this a few days ago. Since taking it, LO has had relentless diarrhoea and is bringing up even more milk with hiccups than before. Has anyone else experienced this? Do we put up with this since the GP said things will get worse before they get better or shall I pop back in and ask for another medication?

If the GP said that things will get worse before better then I would perservere for a bit. I am sorry - this sounds tough for you.

What next?

Time I’m afraid

But it will get better

Haggisfish · 25/11/2018 14:47

Why on earth would it get worse before getting better? Makes no sense. I’d go back.

Or try giving it not so close to milk time.

None of the medication worked for us with Ds2, only time, unfortunately.

Have you considered that the reflux might be caused by CMPA?
www.allergyuk.org/information-and-advice/conditions-and-symptoms/469-cows-milk-allergy

If CMPA has not yet been ruled out, i suggest a dairy-free trial (if BF) or trial of hypoallergenic formula (if FF).

If CMPA has been ruled out, check it's the max dose of ranitidine for baby's weight, and if it's still not helping you can try omeprazole.

When ranitidine didn't work for ds, he was prescribed omepraxole- he has also had domperidone and lansoprazole (which he is on now).

hazeyjane · 25/11/2018 14:58

...sorry that should say omeprazole

FourFoxCakes · 25/11/2018 15:02

Have you tried a wedgehog? Or raising the head of the bed/cot a little?

Second getting CMPA checked out.

Hello OP
I sympathise greatly with you and your little one, and hope you get the support you need to get through what can be a tremendously stressful and exhausting time.
The same thing happened with my DD, who had silent reflux from birth. Omeprazole was the next step after ranitidine - initially we were given the capsule version (Losec) and advised to crush the contents of the capsule and mix it with breastmilk before administering it via syringe. A total nightmare to do with a screaming baby at 3am!! It was my pharmacist friend who told me to ask for the omeprazole suspension - apparently it's not always offered as it costs more than losec. Def much easier if you can get it. I remember worrying after a couple of weeks taking omeprazole that it, too, had stopped working but I persevered and by 13/14 weeks my DD was much improved.

Other things that helped:

  • carried DD lots and lots in baby Bjorn sling so she was upright and milk/acid stayed down longer. Lots of walking with her like that (and bad singing!) to calm DD when the acid burned her poor throat
  • Used an old fashioned bouncy chair from mothercare that, again, kept DD as upright as possible
  • Mixing breast milk (and later Aptamil) with GP prescribed carobel thickener. it's pretty vile looking but worked
  • the consultant recommended early weaning to solids ie 4-5 months, with basics like rice and mashed banana to keep milk down
  • the cot wedge. I've since read about safety concerns with some wedges though, so maybe a bit of research needed on that one.

Best of luck and hope you both get some relief soon Smile
