I'm an epsilon mum who simply looks up in awe at beta mums

NerdMagnet · 21/06/2007 13:05

Me too, WW.
I think that's a Beta mum with an extra dose of benign neglect!

HOW TO SPOT A BETA MUM

  • You can tell what her children had for breakfast by looking at her jeans

  • She has been known to wear pyjamas on the school run

  • She forgets children?s birthday parties

  • She gets drunk at PTA parties

  • You can?t see the floor of her car for old sweet wrappers, assorted papers and general detritus

  • She tries to remember what sex was like with her husband

  • Her house is in a state of perpetual clutter

  • She has rotten fruit and bribery sweets in her handbag

  • She runs out of petrol on the school run

Soph73 · 21/06/2007 13:28

Read this article yesterday and thought they described me perfectly (although without the breakfast stains on me jeans)

Soph73 · 21/06/2007 13:29

Oh, and obviously can´t do the school run in my pjs (although would love to) because I actually work in a school!!!

JodieG1 · 21/06/2007 13:31

I read that at the weekend, the alpha mum sounds worse!

Loshad · 21/06/2007 22:27

definately beta apart from the pyjamas (don't have any) and the sex bit - surely betas do as we do and have sex whilst leaving tv/computer to babysit

My aunt was a beta mum! She had 8 children. I could write a book, but here is a list of things she did,

  • there was never food in her cupboards. About 3-4 times daily, she'd bundle all the kids and the dog in her small car and drive to the local shop to buy their breakfast/lunch/dinner/snacks.

  • sometimes she'd make a roast chicken. She'd find a space on the table to place the chicken (no plate underneath) and the kids would stand around the table picking at it. The dog ate any pieces that fell to the floor

  • the kids always went wild swinging on cupboard doors and throwing cameras/radios at each other. Everything would end up broken or torn within hours of being in the house.

  • locals felt sorry for her and would donate clothes, shoes, toys to her which she would greatfully accept then she would throw into her walk-in wardrobe....only you couldn't walk into it as it was piled to the ceiling with clothes!

  • the kids never had baths. Every now and then, they wouls strip off and bathe in the cattle water tank.

Her children are all degree educated, keep immaculate homes, two have children of their own and I feel they are actually over- fanatical about hygiene!
In fairness to my aunt, she is a lovely person, she reared all her children on her own with NO help from her husband who would work, go to golf, then to the pub. She had no such luxury in her life.

I'm so NOT a beta - have handmade my kids' party invitations every year, for a tip-of-the-iceberg example BUT I have been laughing at myself ever since the alpha-beta subject appeared.

Alphas like me need to chill out. We could learn a lot from Betas. I'm trying.

Not surprised by last post! Beta moms' kids have to fend for themselves more - that can be good in the long run! Leads to more self-reliance.

Mom was super-unorganized - piles of paper all over our house & she could never find anything! But she knew how to have fun and spend quality time with us.

LittleB · 25/06/2007 15:36

I'm more of beta but disagree with kids having to fend for themselves more. Perhaps having the independance to play their own games more? My house as a child was always cluttered and a bit untidy, as is mine but mainly because I do as my mum did and enjoy playing with my dd more than hoovering! me and dd also love to cook, as I did with my mum, which inevitably leads me and dd and the house to ending up a bit messy, but rather cooking at home with a messy house than sending her off to ballet (she's 2 but has friends who already do ballet!)

BetaMummy · 25/06/2007 15:42

I think my nickname gives me away....and I'm not sure it's only today's breakfast on these jeans!

lucyellensmum · 25/06/2007 16:23

i was an alpha mummy, until i found mumsnet - now my house is a mess, i never have time for sex, im always in my pj's and my children (and dog) are neglected.

fryalot · 25/06/2007 16:25

am maybe a beta mummy, perhaps even a theta or an omega mummy

lucyellensmum · 25/06/2007 19:07

isnt it funny, we all put ourselves forward as betamummy's cos really, none of us ever wanted to be an alpha mummy

Marls001 · 25/06/2007 22:24

LittleB - certainly didn't meant to imply anything there ... just remember fending for MYSELF more, so that's what I should have written!

Marls001 · 25/06/2007 22:28

And maybe, I'm actually something of a Beta & it's just the art projects that I like to have a laugh over at my own expense ...
