Weaning nightmares

Hi all, looking for reassurance and advice really. Have been weaning my 7 month old since he was 5 months and I'm losing the plot a little bit. He only wants to eat fruit and only certain types of fruit. I offer him anything else which I do regularly and at every meal and he refuses it, cries and becomes a hot red mess. I've tried offering one spoon of savoury followed by one spoon of sweet, the same on each spoon, and fruit blended in the same puree. Sometimes it works, often there's meltdowns, It's exhausting. Today I didn't offer him anything else but what was I front of him and just stopped mealtime, took him out of the chair and tried offering it to him half an hour later but Id missed the boat. Please, please help!

Have you tried him with finger food?
I wouldn’t worry too much at this stage to be honest, food is for experimenting, and he’ll be still getting his nutrition from milk.
Just keep offering different foods, a combination of purées and finger foods and it’ll click eventually.

Don’t panic. Offer him somethings he likes and some things he doesn’t at each meal and entirely ignore what he eats and doesn’t. He’s still tiny and food before 1 is just for fun

Are you just offering purée or finger foods too? Have you tried things like yoghurt with fruit purée mixed in? Or fruit purée on toast fingers? I’d put a soft carrot stick, piece of broccoli, cucumber or whatever on his plate and if he chucks it on the floor don’t stress. This phase is about discovering textures and tastes and learning to enjoy food so it’s important that you stay calm and unbothered so he doesn’t associate your concerned/stress reactions with eating

Also - don’t compare. Some babies take to weaning much earlier but it makes no difference long term. My first ate barely anything except yoghurt until after a year old, my second would consume anything in sight at 6 months

I would move to finger foods and stick to mostly savoury ones, which fruit only as a pudding or a snack and leave him to it. It's fine if he doesn't eat it. He will eventually. They will definitely prefer sugary foods if you let them, because those foods give an immediate energy boost, but the key is really just offering them as a treat as they aren't that calorie dense or nutritious. It doesn't matter though if he eats right now. You're just trying to develop his taste buds and get him to explore more food, so if he doesn't want the savoury stuff, that's fine. Just try next time.
