Car seats and cold weather

DS is 5.5m, so this is our first winter negotiating the "no snow suit in car seat". I know this is a dumb question but how do you keep them warm from house to car? Hes got a frugi snugglesuit which helps for now but its getting very cold and it'll take the edge off soon but hes going to be freezing!! Same the other end, do i wrestle him into a snowsuit on the back seat of the car? I know im sounding super thick but he screams getting in and out of the car so i just wondered if I'm missing something. Sadly the car seat and him together are too heavy for my chronic back problems (i could only just cope when he was newborn!)

Any ideas much appreciated

Wrap him in a small blanket?

niclw · 20/11/2018 15:34

I had the same question. My friend has loaned me the Snugglebundl she had with her two children. I'm going to give it a go and see if it works. I will use it to carry my LO to the car. I will then open it when he is in the seat so it doesn't come between him and the harness and then put a blanket over him. The website for it is www.snugglebundl.co.uk but I believe they sell in various places.

Where do you live and how cold does it actually get? Got to admit that it's something that I never had to deal with, why can't your baby wear a snowsuit in the car seat? Why can't you just use a blanket?

DS is 6 months and I make sure he’s wearing a goddess cardigan and coat to take him to the car and then a blanket once he’s in. When I pick him up from nursery in the evening I put the blanket on my seat with the heated seat on on the way there. The blanket is nice and toasty when he gets under it.

popcorn snowsuit means you can’t get the straps tight enough.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 20/11/2018 15:44

That should be a woollen cardigan and hat. Not sure what goddessses has to do with it, and no coat.

Northernbeachbum · 20/11/2018 15:52

Maybe im just worrying unnecessarily,im a cold weather hater and get cold easily so assume everyones the same Grin a blanket I'd end up dropping as he's damn wriggly. I did wonder about getting one of the warm travel gro bags though.

At what point do clothes become too thick for a car seat? Thick woolen jumper I've always felt is ok but with sherpa lining i think too thick? Is that about right?

Sherpa lining is too thick.
Had two winter babies, we kept their hats on and either used a gro travel sleeping bag or if you have a maxi Cosi you can buy the footmuff for the car seat. As they got older it was long sleeve vest, long sleeve top and thin jumper.

Bluebelltulip · 20/11/2018 15:59

If the journey to and from the car is long enough for them to get cold then it's worth taking coat/snowsuit off when you get to the car and putting it back on after.

Steelesauce · 20/11/2018 15:59

Just use a blanket. I've never even used a snow suit. You can strap the car and put their coats on backwards too. Chances are you'll have the heating on in the car so it's only until the car heats up.

I’ve got a fleece blanket that fits inside car seat. The straps go through the blanket so that there’s nothing between the baby and the straps

The blanket then wraps around the top of them like a swaddle

They sell them amazon - look for car seat blanket

mindutopia · 20/11/2018 20:02

Hooded jumper or jumper with hat on top and blanket tucked around them on the bottom. Or warm your car first and just get them in quickly. Anything more than that in a heated car will be too hot. Out and about, foot muff for the pushchair. We have a clevamama one and it’s amazing.

Viper84 · 20/11/2018 21:13

I always dressed DD in a vest, top, cardigan, hat & gloves. Then use a thick blanket in the car. Used same blanket to transport her between house and car etc, hope that helps 😊

Rosesared · 20/11/2018 21:54

Starsnugs are great, and can be used with carseat!

NotWorkingArlene · 20/11/2018 21:59

Tuppence and Crumble Star wraps are great. Cosy and not too thick. I use mine every single day with an added (extra) hat if it's really cold.

PaulMorel · 21/11/2018 05:47

For me car sear blanket will do.

PerfectlyPosed · 21/11/2018 05:54

I've got one of these and love it.

eurochick · 21/11/2018 06:38

We used a fleece onesie. Warm, but thin enough not to be a problem for the straps.

BlueMoon33 · 21/11/2018 08:11

I’ve got a jojo maman polar fleece snowsuit, it’s thin and light but lovely and warm - there’s loads of them on eBay!

whystay · 21/11/2018 08:25

Just get a car seat blanket/footmuff, there's loads of universal ones out there, I got one off Amazon for around £10. It zips up round them when you're outside and then I unzip it so it's open when they're in the car as it can get pretty hot.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 21/11/2018 08:29

@popcornwizard it's dangerous to wear a snowsuit in the car as it means you can't tighten it enough. babies have died as in an accident the filling compresses and the baby flies out of the harness.

redexpat · 21/11/2018 08:32

DDs granny knitted a little poncho that worked a treat.

Nedzilla · 22/11/2018 16:49

look up those blankets with feet

'nod pod 'and 'bug in a rug' are both good
