but was he rude? he stated a fact ' i don't want you for stories I want Mummy'

Would it be referable to teach a child to hide their feelings and pretend ( for an adults sake) to pretend they are happy when they are not?

DD ca be just like that with my father. Makes me very embarrassed as I know how keen my dad is on her. Think she knows it too, so less keen to impress (in same vein she can be staggeringly rude to me).
She will be 4 soon. Wish she'd be less grumpy at times.
I would hate hate hate to have a call from my mother saying dd no longer cute/lovely. That'd send me over the edge into teary eyed wobbly lipped state.

Marne · 21/06/2007 11:34

Dd1 is often rude, she wont let my mum or dh put her to bed, if dh trys she say's 'nooooooooooo mummy put me to bed, daddy's rubish'

She told the woman up the road to 'go away' a few weeks ago

i have an idea

coach him so that next time he sees your dad he says

no no fuck off you old tosser if you come anywhere near me I'll rip your arms off and slap you with the wet bits

THEN anything after that ie normal 4yo rudeness will seem mild in comparison and you can be smug about how much ds3s behaviour has improved

CountessDracula · 21/06/2007 11:35

(god I am aged parent disgruntledness management genius I think)

Cammelia · 21/06/2007 11:36

when my dd was aged 4 she once said to me in front of my mother: Grandma's fat

My dd has lovely manners now

does he wear his heart on his sleeve, ds3?

one of mine (dd) can be incredibly rude because she is very direct (and also very good with words, like her dad ggrr).

I also think it's a personality type.

oliveoil · 21/06/2007 11:39

dd1 told my MIL that "grandma has a fat bottom, mummy hasn't, why grandma why why why?" and followed her round the house repeating it

hahahahahahahahahaah

jangly · 21/06/2007 11:40

Ah but the grandkids are hugely important in the grandparents' lives, and they do want so much to be loved by them. I expect he was feeling very upset that ds didn't welcome him on this ocassion. Perhaps your mum has felt the same on other ocassions. Its easy to think "oh, they should grow up", but human nature is human nature. It'll blow over. Don't be hard on either of them. Sure you wouldn't be anyway.

LilRedWG · 21/06/2007 11:44

Your DS3 wasn't rude to your Dad, just honest.

Good God, I'm ruder than that when tired

purpleduck · 21/06/2007 12:06

My kids are super polite to grandparents, because they hardly see them! Surly your dad knows that kids often let their emotions out to people they are comfy with (thats why mums get all the crap!!) And your ds was just taking out his disappointment that you were going. Its not great to be rude, but he is just 3!!
