Can I give both cows milk & growing up milk?

Hello,

My daughter is 13 months & takes growing up milk with her porridge on a morning & then has a bottle before bed. (Sometimes wants one in afternoon)

I'm wondering if I can use cows milk in her porridge just for ease & then growing up milk for her bottles as I've been told it has more nutritions ?

Also does anyone have any tips on baby taking milk from cup? She takes water fine but will only take milk from a bottle. Does this matter to much?

Thanks so much x

There's no need for growing up milk at all tbh

MaraScottie · 19/11/2018 08:26

Growing up milk is completely unnecessary to begin with!
Who told you it was more nutritious?

Ceecee18 · 19/11/2018 08:49

I do. DD is 16 months and has stage 2 milk of a night. I know there's no need for it but I find if she has cows milk she will wake for milk at 5:30 in the morning. The growing up milk keeps her full for a bit longer and she wakes at 7ish. She's not a big eater, only on the 25th centile for weight despite being very tall and I do prefer knowing she's had the extra vitamins in it. It won't do any harm anyway and the health visitor said that although the recommend cows milk its not really a big deal.

Cows milk if fine in porridge and other food from 6 months. Agree with the others, there’s no need for growing up milk, it’s expensive and unnecessary. Babies and children should be given a vitamin supplement every day anyway.

I’d switch her to Cows milk and if you’re worried about nutrition, concentrate on offering her a wide variety of food.

There’s some good advice on nutrition in this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust Smile

when my babies were that age, i would only give formula/follow on if they were ill and not eating much. If they are eating well, then cows milk is fine. It isnt water, milk already has vitamins, protein and iron in it

mindutopia · 19/11/2018 11:19

We didn't use any formula at all after a year. They don't need it. The growing up milk especially is very sugary compared to cow's milk. I'd just offer normal full fat cow's milk on everything and a vitamin (they need a vitamin at that point anyway even if they are on formula still as they won't be drinking enough to get the vitamins they need).

NewMummyx · 20/11/2018 08:46

Thanks for your advice girls.

She's a mega healthy eater as both me & my husband are. I just read that there's so much more nutritions in growing up milk.

But giving her formula with the porridge we have on a morning I thought wouldn't mix right.

I think I'm more on edge because she was 5 weeks early so I want her taking in the best xx

If she will take cows milk, just give that and a multi vitamin Mine wouldn't take cows milk as a drink until she was over 2. Now I can't get her to drink anything else. I am also far too soft. You will certainly find cows milk a lot cheaper and easier with less sugar.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 20/11/2018 15:30

The manufacturers if the growing up milk are very good at convincing parents that they need to give it to their children, if fact they spend a lot of money trying to come up with ways to convince you.

Unless it’s prescribed by a Paeditrician, there is absolutely no need for formula or growing up milk after their first birthday. As long as she’s gettibg a daily vitamin and 300 ml of full fat cow’s milk a day, she’ll be fine Smile

Lazypuppy · 21/11/2018 19:52

Just give full fat cows milk.

anniehm · 21/11/2018 20:09

Full fat cows milk is fine from 6 months in food, as a drink I was told a year (I bf to 18 months but they had occasional cups of milk).

PaulMorel · 22/11/2018 06:46

You'll choose 1 of them. I think maybe 1 milk is enough just to make sure that the nutrients are package in 1 milk.

TeddyIsaHe · 22/11/2018 06:49

I give dd Arla Big Milk, Which is basically cows milk with some added vits. It’s peace of mind for me, and it lasts a week in the fridge so less waste!

NewMummyx · 24/11/2018 04:59

Thanks girls.

I breastfed exclusively until she was 7 months and she seems to only like warm milk. So I think I've become attached to the easiness of my perfect prep machine 🙈

Just put some cow's milk in the microwave and then you have warm milk. Always shake or stir it afterwards to make sure there are no hot spots.

NewMummyx · 24/11/2018 09:46

Yep thank you 😊

Trying her on cows milk today. She's just taken it fine with porridge but won't drink it out of a breaker. But she's always likes her milk from a bottle & water from beaker xx

Put the cows milk in a bottle

Maryann1975 · 24/11/2018 09:58

Formula companies are excellent with their marketing and have managed to convince parents that follow on milk is really important. It isn’t. Cows milk is fine after one when, like you say your dc is having a varied and healthy diet. And it’s much cheaper and far easier to prepare.
As a pp said, warm it in the microwave and give it in a bottle. Try again with a beaker periodically. Drinking from a beaker will come in time.

Furrycushion · 24/11/2018 10:04

I'm old enough to remember that follow on milk (didn't know it had changed name) was only introduced for one reason. Branding. They can't advertise first milks but can advertise follow on milks, so the advertising works for first milks too. Children down the ages have managed without it. If you have trouble switching her over mix them & gradually reduce the amount of follow on milk.

zsazsajuju · 24/11/2018 10:05

Growing up milk has more and a better balance of vitamins and minerals than cows milk. It’s tailored to her needs. No harm at all in giving it to her - probably the most nutritious food you could give her as it’s tailored for her needs.

No need to give her cows milk but if she likes it and is not allergic no harm in doing so either.

There’s always so much craziness on mumsnet about “formula companies”. It’s a food/drink tailored to the needs of humans. Most toddlers are used to drinking it and enjoy it. Why would you not give them it? Why wouldn’t you want to ensure your toddler gets all the vitamins and minerals they need?

zsazsajuju · 24/11/2018 10:12

Also I don’t understand all the posters saying give cows milk instead of formula. It lacks essential vitamins and minerals (eg no iron). Why would you give your child an inferior food? I gave my dcs formula till 5. I have them some cows milk too but I don’t drink it myself so just when I happened to have it to cook with. I now give them arla big milk.

People’s bias against formula milk is crazy. Why deny your child an extremely nutritious food when they are at a key Development stage? Or at all? Go for the Aldi brand if you’re worried about the cost (works out less than cows milk).

zsazsajuju · 24/11/2018 10:16

And it’s utterly bonkers to take away a drink a toddler likes and is used to to replace it with an inferior one and a vitamin pill! Jeezo op, give her formula.

LettuceP · 24/11/2018 10:17

zsazsajuju I think you've been watching too many formula adverts. You should have said it's "tailored to her needs" a few more times for good measure.

OP just give her cows milk and a multivitamin every day as pp's have said. With regards to drinking it from a cup I didn't give mine a choice. Bottles went in the bin and if she wouldn't have it from a cup then it was tough luck. She soon started having it from a cup. I'm a bit of a meanie though 😂

empmalswa · 24/11/2018 10:19

Also I don’t understand all the posters saying give cows milk instead of formula. It lacks essential vitamins and minerals (eg no iron)

Milk for milk yes. But your child should be getting these essential vitamins and minerals from food. No need for formula.

empmalswa · 24/11/2018 10:20

Why would you give your child an inferior food? I gave my dcs formula till 5.

Did you not give them food? Why on earth would you give formula for 5 years Confused
