He says caca just before doing his business and just afterwards, he even try to get out of the bath saying caca when needed, he can stay dry for a couple of hours, follows easy orders (he was hanging his laundry at the radiator a few days ago), but he is able to do as he is said, he try to put his shoes on as well as those of the rest of the family but he doesn know/is interested in pulling up or down his shorts, but can certainly concentrate with a book or a toy for 5-10m.

He seems to be showing all the signs of being ready, though he is only 18m old, the problem is that there's a stressful time aproaching as I have to turn in my dissertation in a couple of months and DH will be traveling quite a lot, once the disertation is finish, we will be visiting my family for a month (a trip which includes an 18 hrs flight), so lots of changes and probably not the best time to potty train him, but if we wait it would need to be done until mid january. Is this a good idea?

PS And I say I'm lazy because of the thought of a hurried under needing to wait for an available toilet 8-10 times during the flight drives me mad...

Thanks Twigglet, I was worried that he may get used to it and would loose interest but this thing of having a potty trained 22m old in a flight is a recipe for disaster I would need to change not only his nappy but all the outfit several times...

I wouldn't rush him unless he shows serious interest in the whole potty/toilet procedure himself. As you fear a flight with a newly trained toddler can be stressful, or even one much older, as the toilets aren't exactly child friendly and you have to be seated for long periods especially in turbulence and have the aisles blocked by food service and duty free trolleys. Also the disruption in the next few months could make you less attentive to his signals and result in more accidents which would be frustrating all round. ds trained in a December at 2.8yrs. The time of year was n't an issue as long as the house is warm enough for them to be lightly clothed at first. Just make sure you have easy to wear and wash clothes such as loose fitting jogging bottoms to make logistics a bit easier. By January he may well be more capable with clothes and the whole idea anyway.

I agree, there's no need to train right now. Here's my (similar) experience: we tried training ds at 20m because, like yours, he showed clear signs of being ready intellectually. We too weren't that keen on training him as I was about 5m pregnant and ds was about to start nursery a month or two later. He was very keen, understood what we wanted and did his best to comply. Over a few days we could see that his control was improving, but it was also clear that not succeeding was upsetting him more and more, so we stopped. The potty was left out, as a toy, to practice with, whatever, as was the toilet seat insert, but the briefs were put away and not refered to. We tried again exactly one year later and it took just 48 hours for ds to be completely trained.
