Child car seat in front seat

Is this safe please? The child is 5 and has a high backed booster seat.

We are supposed to be giving someone a lift today but I have just discovered that I can't fit in between the two child seats in the back of the car now that dd is in a bigger car seat.

It’s safe if you can turn off your passenger airbag otherwise I wouldn’t risk it.
If you can’t turn off the air bag then you could position the passenger seat back as far as it will go but I personally think this is risky because you can never be sure what the detonation range is for the air bag.

Yes. Push the seat back away from airbag.

We've done this and pushed the seat back as far as it will go. I'd also put my child in the front.

It’s fine you just need to turn off the airbag which is usually fairly easy to do in most cars

I have no idea how to turn off the passenger airbag. Unfortunately I can't push the passenger seat back because there is another child's car seat behind it which is rear facing and takes up lots of space.

Bugger!

Yes if you turn the airbag off.
When my youngest was in the baby seat we put him in the front as it was easier to keep an eye on him & just turned the airbag off.

Have you got the car manual? Or can you google car & model?

It’s really easy to do once you get the manual up.

autumnleaf1 · 18/11/2018 09:51

I think that turning the airbag off only applies to rear facing seats. If your child of forward facing, you don't have to turn the airbag off. www.childcarseats.org.uk/carrying-other-peoples-children/child-seat-and-seat-belt-laws/

It’s not illegible not to turn the air bag off if it’s not rear facing but that link you posted states further down that if you are carrying a child in the front the airbag should be turned off.
doleritedinosaur annoyingly not all cars allow you to easily turn off the passenger air bag. My 59 reg focus could only do it if you paid £200 for the garage to do a modification to the car. It didn’t come as standard. This was very annoying to find out having spent an hour reading the manual and fiddling around inside the car.

gamerwidow · 18/11/2018 10:06

*not illegal

doleritedinosaur · 18/11/2018 10:28

@gamerwindow oh no I didn’t realise. A few of us have had to do it & its definitely not been £200.

Bloody hell that is a lot.

GoodnightMooncup · 18/11/2018 15:21

Thanks for all of your replies. Apparently ours can only be turned off by a garage. I hope it doesn't cost £200!
