Bladder Issues - please help

Hi. Newbie here. Sorry for long post.
My 5 year old son has always been good with bladder control.
Keeps it in all night. Wees In the morning.
Goes regular during the day.
We went away in October and he started going to the toilet every 5 mins. He's literally be up again after just going. This became a regular thing and over a few hours he'd be back and forth up to 40 times!
Each time he went he said he really needed to go. We just assumed he was drinking a lot more as we were In Spain and didn't think to much of it although thought it was a bit odd.
We came home and it seemed to settle but after a few days it started back up again.
I took him to the doctors on Tuesday where there asked for a urine sample. He couldn't go. We were there for an hour and 4 times he said he needed a wee but couldn't go.
So now it seems he thinks he wants to go all the time but can't or doesn't need too.
They did a blood glucose test and that was fine but I had to take the urine sample in the next day and haven't heard back.
Why has this suddenly started?
He never used to be like this and it's really hard and draining as just this evening since he's time he's been about 10 times. I can't really tell how much if any he's actually weeing when he goes and I don't want to stress him to much by standing over him but what do I do?

I'm going to chase up the doctors on Monday but I don't understand what's happening Confused

Is your GP open tomorrow? I would chase up the news on the urine specimen. Frequent peeing and feeling that you need to go but cant could be a UTI. My DD had a bladder infection when she was 7 and it was awful for her. She also was back and forth to the loo many times in a short period.

You are absolutely right to not stand over him and it sounds like you are doing a great job with helping him and being supportive. Can you get him to pee into a container maybe though? It will be helpful to your GP to know how much he is shifting with each go.

Sounds like it could be a UTI, as PP said I would chase the doctor.

IF it turns out not to be a UTI, sometimes ppl can accidentally train themselves into having an overactive bladder. I'm a bit tired to explain sorry but something to bear in mind if he doesn't have an infection. Hope the wee man is ok x

Watch him for a temperature or any vomiting over the weekend and get him seen if either happens, as it could be an infection getting worse.

Thanks all.
He's well in himself. No temp or sickness.
This has been going on for about 4 or 5 weeks now.
I'll chase up Monday as closed tomorrow.
It took so long to get dry can't bare the thought of having to re train his bladder. Can't see how it's changed so quickly or why for that matter.
Thanks again all.
Any advice welcome. X

As this has only started aged five, I would think it's unlikely that there's anything physically wrong with him like a blockage. I'm not a nurse or doctor though, just had a lot of experience dealing with urologists.

Re the training thing. Sometimes people can get anxious about going to the loo, then go too frequently in anticipation of needing to go and then train the bladder to become overactive.

More likely that it's a low grade UTI I would guess though. Really hope you guys get sorted soon.x

Thank you.
It's reassuring to think it's easily solved but really annoyed that after 2 days I've not heard back from the doctors.
Bloody life is frustrating.

The GP can do a dip stick test there and then to test for lucosytes - I think that's what it is), basically it's an indicator of whether there's an infection. Then it goes to the lab for a culture to see what, if any, bacteria grows. I think that's two to three days. So they should have an answer on Monday.

Thank you.
Because he couldn't do a wee at our appointment I had to take it in the next day after his morning wee Blush
That was yesterday so hoping if I call Monday they can tell me something.
The doctor did say she'd call the same day so I'm a little annoyed.
