using phone in the bath

A warning - I've just read an alarming story of a teenager reading her phone in the bath and dropping it. She was electrocuted.
There was evidently some doubt about the electric wiring in the house, but you never know.
The link is is french:

It's in French?

It’s in French. But how can you be electrocuted by a smart phone? Hmm

PotteringAlong · 15/11/2018 20:43

I assume the smart phone was plugged in.

It was plugged in. Tragic but no more dangerous than using any other electronics plugged in while bathing.

Isn't this why you can't have plugs in bathrooms. I thought everyone knew you could electrocuted if you have things plugged in in the bath

chipsandgin · 15/11/2018 20:49

Considering bathrooms can’t have electric sockets in them here or in France (disregarding the whole having a phone in the bath is ridiculous thing) the only way to charge a phone whilst using in the bath would be to have an extension lead plugged in, which is next level stupid.

Surely the chances of that happening are minimal & most parents will have discussed the whole electricity/water issue?

Can’t be much of a RL risk, all that dropping a phone in the bath will do is ruin a very expensive bit of kit, dropping one that is plugged in would make you eligible for a Darwin Award!

CaledonianSleeper · 15/11/2018 20:55

The phone was plugged is using an extension cable, and the charging cable itself was in poor condition, apparently. So there was significantly more to it than just using a phone in the bath.

Caprisunorange · 15/11/2018 20:58

WowShock if you’re that desperate to use a battery dead phone in the bath at least use a battery pack!

This is nature weeding out the stupid people

After I'd read it I asked husband about it, he's a (retired) electrician.
He said the same as most of you - the phone must have been plugged in somewhere. There are still houses with primitive and unsafe wiring.
Even so a word of warning. And very tragic.
Reminds me of a film I saw some time ago about a family working somewhere in the middle east. Their little boy jumped into the swimming pool which had unsafe electrics and was killed instantly.
Sorry if this panics people, I'm usually more phlegmatic. But this really shocked me.

It was unlucky. The article says that itself. There's usually a low charge to a phone but because the wires in the charging cable were exposed the electric current went into the water.

BorisAndDoris · 16/11/2018 11:41

It's common knowledge in the UK that we don't have electric plug sockets in the bathroom because of the clear and obvious danger. I mean, look at the horrifying consequences of hairdryers in bathrooms: you get shit movies like "What Women Want".

::shudder::
