8 week old spat out Calpol after immunisations

Hello!

My 8 week old boy had his first set of immunisations this morning. He took the first dose of Calpol like a dream at the docs but I just gave him his second dose and he spat out half of it, maybe more, straight away. His temperature is fine so far but I wondered if I should give him a small dose to top up what he spat out. The problem is that I don't know measurement wise how much he spat up Confused

I have tried calling my HV but her phone is off

Thanks!

Mine did this and I gave another dose 4 hours later to the minute. I wouldn't try to measure out what he spat out. Just settle down on the sofa cuddling and put Netflix or something on.

I wouldn’t worry about it especially as he seems fine. I’d just wait another 4 hrs before you give next dose. There’s not a lot your HV can do or say.

My son would refuse calpol until he was about 18m. Wouldn't take it via spoon or syringe. I ended up mixing it with yogurt. When nursery gave it to him they mixed it with milk. He now will ask for calpol (3yo) obv I don't give it unless he has high temp ect. But otherwise once they are old enough try nurofen whihnis orange flavour. Or I think its asda do a cherry flavour paracetomol

If he hasn't got a temperature and is fine then you don't need to give Calpol.

It taest vial neather of mine would take it. The generic parectomol or ibuprofen you can get from the chemist seemed to go down better then the brand stuff. Cheaper to.

Thank you so much for your responses!
Brilliant ok yes I did think it would be a bit risky guessing how much! Cuddles and Netflix sounds like a good shout :) I fancy watchibg The Sinner!

Similar happened here except it was me never having used the syringe before so I catapulted half of it over her face. I didn't know how much had actually gone in but you can't risk overdosing paracetamol so we just waited the 4 hours until she could safely have more. She was fine!

Nancy268 · 13/11/2018 16:08

Ahh I didn't realise it wasn't as necessary if he didn't have a temperature. Thank you! I'll keep a close eye on him but he has settled down to sleep!

Try putting the calpol in a bottle teat! Best baby tip ever. Oh I binge watched the sinner all weekend. Loved it

Nancy268 · 13/11/2018 16:09

I was was scared of catapulting it over his face!!!

I'm not sure how to tag people but that's a great idea to put it into a teat! As I loved the first season of the Sinner!! Excited to watch the next one

What way do you give it to him?

I’ve found the best way is to alternate a dummy with the syringe and administer the dose in five or so small bursts. That way if they spit any out, they’re still getting ~80% of the dose.

One of the first times I had to give it to DD I didn’t appreciate quite how much fluid 2.5ml was for an 8 week old and I just shot it into her mouth in one go. Poor thing was water boarded with Calpol.

Sorry OP, it IS necessary ; whether or not they have a temperature. PPs are right in other respects though, you can't guess how much your baby has swallowed so wait until the next dose. When you give it ; squirt right back into cheek , a little at a time and watch for swallow before the next little bit. Babies , sensibly, learn quickly how to spit things out that taste nasty so you have to preempt them.

I was using the syringe but I don't think I used enough force with the first wee push so he was able to spit it out quite easily but I shot the second half and it shot tongue back of his mouth! I can't believe how well he took it at the docs and he was sitting up!!

Yikes, ahhh ok yes got you!

These things are always such a wee worry!
