Weaning a reflux baby nightmare

Posted this in weaning originally but hoping it might get a bit more traffic here.

Ds (6 months next week) has been on anti reflux milk since he was about 3 weeks old which has worked really well for him.

Every few weeks I try him again on normal formula in the hope his reflux has improved but each time he throws it back up so we go back to the anti reflux.

Today we tried him on baby rice as I heard that can sometimes help babies with reflux. He had the tiniest of mouthfuls and instantly started wretching quite violently then threw it up.

Will make an appointment with gp I think but wanted to know of others experiences with this. Do we have to face months of vomiting?? Do I carry on weaning him as normal but assume he will throw it all back up?

Sorry Thewalker75 not up to the weining stage so no advise for you as I’m a FTM. But I’ve just created a thread regarding anti reflux milk, my LO is on cow and gate but really straining and screaming when passing stools, and their a pale yellow dry texture, curious did your LO get this?

Sorry to boycot your thread, but sounds like anti reflux worked well for you and wondering if I should persevere x

I had this with one of my DC and I know what a nightmare it is.

My advice is don't waste time with a GP if you are desperate, go to a specialist and ask for omeprazole. It will sort you out.

Good luck. It won't last for ever but I know how miserable it is.

We had a reflux baby. Stop trying the normal milk and just accept that they need reflux milk. Once we started with the baby rice at 17 weeks he started to settle down but yes there was lots of crying, screaming, vomit and sleepless nights involved. Our baby is now 6 and although he weaned successfully he's not a big eater more of a grazer which he finds easier.

Thanks for your replies. I will brace myself for the vomiting and screaming as it doesn't sound like this will be an easy ride.

I spoke with health visitor today and she did suggest a possible milk allergy but I'm not convinced. She is getting a specialist to give me a call so hopefully they can advise further.

Will definitely stick with the anti reflux milk as hes never sick on it and seems quite content for the most part.

S2204 sorry you're having trouble with your little one. I use the aptamil anti reflux and to begin with he really struggled with it as it was almost too thick for him to get it out of the bottle (even using fast flow teats) and he did struggle with constipation.

What works for us (and this goes against the guidance so might be worth speaking with your hv) is adding a bit more water, so for example an 8oz feed will have 7 and a half scoops of formula. It made it easier for him to finish a bottle and seemed to resolve the constipation issue.

He now goes normally but his poo is different to when he was on normal formula - very yellow and sometimes like plasticine.

DS2 had horrendous reflux and weaning made things a lot worse. He would choke and vomit a lot more, so be ready for things to go worse before going better.
Solids, were the worse, so I tried soups which at the beginning were quite liquid and then gradually I made them thicker. Try to boil a carrot on it own or with a bit of potato for 30 min . Put the veggies in a small pot, cover with water and allow a couple of cm above, boil on slow simmer and blend.
Eating with a spoon and through a bottle are two very different actions, and other muscles are involves, so I even tried to put the soup in a bottle and cut the hole a bit bigger with scissor.
Soups that are nice for babies are leeks, carrots, potato, celery, zucchini...
His absolute favorite was potatoes and peas.
Sometimes I would boil a bit of rice and add it to his soups.
It was a pain for me but now 12 years later and reflux free, he eat every vegetables you can offer, so even if it doesn't really help with weaning, it might help with growing a love of veggies!

I was BFing him, and the gastro suspected intolerance, so me and him, did;t eat any dairy, wheat, eggs/poultry, acidic food (citrus, tomatoes) .for 2 years
