Fluoride toothpaste

Please could I ask for views on fluoride toothpaste for children? I've been using a 1000ppm toothpaste for my 20 month year old as soon as his teeth started to cone through. My sister tells me that fluoride is really toxic and to give fluoride free toothpaste - is this true?

My dentist told me last week when I went with my baby and toddler that you can just use adult toothpaste from birth. You just use a small amount as some kids toothpaste doesn't have enough fluoride in. So think you do need fluoride. I am not sure about using adult toothpaste but she is probably right as she is a dentist.

Stick with the fluoride toothpaste. Just use a small amount until three years of age then a good stripe after that. Too much fluoride while the permanent teeth are starting to form can cause mottling but by 3 all the permanent teeth have formed. Then compare notes with your sister and sympathise as her children’s teeth disintegrate!
And for good measure stick to water, avoid fruit juice, smoothies and dried fruit, most important of all treat all carbonated drinks as toxic waste. I managed to keep my DS off most dangerous foods by positive suggestion ie whenever he was offered anything I didn’t want him to have I just said he didn’t like it. He was 11 before he tried coke and found out it was ok. Used the same technique with broccoli, I was always telling people how much he loved it.
Sorry for the lecture but as a dentist I hate having to take teeth out of 5 year olds or explaining to “well informed mums” that their dietary choices are crap.

We are told here to use toothpaste with 1000(I think mg?) fluoride in it until they are 2 and if you look at supermarkets this seems to be what the kids toothpaste has in then

A smear of 1000ppm toothpaste up to age 3 I think and them it's pea sized blob after that
