Teething - reassurance please?

Hi all,

My Baby boy is 20 weeks on Monday and is going through a week of hell with teething. We’ve tried every product on the market to help him but he just seems to have no appitite just now and hits the bottle away or shrieks when it goes near his mouth other times he takes a few oz at a time.

He normally has around 35oz a day if his milk but only had 19oz yesterday and is doing slightly better today.

I guess I am looking for reassurance that his normal appetite will return and he a will start polishing off his bottles again.

Will he wake up one morning and start finishing bottles or will be gradually increase his oz a bit at a time?

I want my greedy baby back!!

Any advice or your experiences welcome.

Love Claire xxx

Any temperature or other symptoms? Ear ache can sometimes look like teething. Anbesol is the best product I found for it, also damp flannels that I kept in the fridge for them to chew on. I wouldn't worry too much about reduced milk for a day or two.

Pissedoffdotcom · 09/11/2018 18:49

This is my DS too. 20 weeks yesterday, first tooth appearing. Poor soul is inconsolable! Very little milk, rubbish naps & generally feeling rubbish. I definitely don't remember DD being this bad!

ClaireM1989 · 09/11/2018 18:50

Hi,

No other symptoms. I’ve had him checked out by the GP. I’ll keep an eye out though. I’ve found that if I put his milk in the fridge 20 minutes before feeding, he takes it much better. Perhalps the cool soothes his gums. I’ll put some flannels in the fridge too. Thanks for the advice xx

My first suffered terribly with teething too from 3 months. Have you tried granules?
Please try not to worry, it’s heartbreaking seeing them like that but he’ll soon return to normal. As long as you keep offering it he’ll take it when he’s ready.

Hi pissedofdotcom (love the name :))

It’s horrible to watch them in pain isn’t it? Calpol and dentinox seems to help us the most at the moment. I read ibuprofen is meant to help more as it is an anti inflammatory to reduce gum swelling.

Anything working for you?

It’s the feeding that concerns me, I was so worried about putting him to bed last night thinking he would dehydrate but he was absolutely fine.

Haha thank you, it pretty much sums up how i spend my life right now 😂

We are using anbesol gel & calpol when he gets really inconsolable. Lots of teethers in the fridge. We recently started giving him tastes of food (he started nicking stuff) so we invested in some bickie pegs which he REALLY goes to town on.

I'm going to try the milk bottle in the fridge, that's genius. Never even thought about it yet we have teethers in there! DS hasn't woken for a night feed in about 2 weeks now but I was expecting it last night...he just kept waking up crying instead bless him 😔

ClaireM1989 · 09/11/2018 19:12

It’s amazing how much they test your patience. Everyone told me the first 6 weeks were the hardest - what a load of rubbish lol.

Ooh will need to try bickiepegs - thanks for the tip.

I only realised the cooler milked worked when I gave him some of the ready made milk we have in the cupboard as I was sick of making him bottles of formula with the prep machine and pouring most of it down the sink. Then it came to me the prep machine milk is much warmer. Must be sore on already angry gums. No wonder he shrieked whenever I came near him with it!!

Thanks for the reassurance Teaandbiscuits35!!

I was just worried he will lose weight but we are having a better day than yesterday so that’s something.

Hopefully he is back to his greedy self soon. Offering him milk every hour or so is exhausting!!

Xxx

Yep never even thought, we use the prep machine too. Will give that a go for sure.

The bickie pegs are a flipping godsend tbh. He really gnaws down on them poor soul. Thankfully we can see a tooth just poking so hoping it won't be too long. Cold carrot is also really good

LapinR0se · 09/11/2018 19:15

Please take him to the doctor, it might be an ear or throat infection and nothing to do with teeth

ClaireM1989 · 09/11/2018 19:38

Hi LapinR0se,

I thought it might be an ear or throat infection too but he’s been checked by the doctors twice and is in perfect health. He’s smiley and much of the time too. Xxx

How was your night ClaireM1989

DS went down at 7.30pm...woke up at 8.30pm...down again at 10pm...then awake a LOT. I think I'd rather go back to the once nightly feeds tbh 😂

ClaireM1989 · 10/11/2018 09:23

Morning, Pissedoffdotcom,

Our night was good, DS had last bottle at 2130 then slept until 4am for a feed. Then wouldn’t settle back down until we took him in with us! He woke up grumpy so I think it’s going to be one of those days Sad

Great!!

Boo to grumpy babies! DS has been properly awake since 6.15am so we have finally managed to get him to nap. I'm hoping for at least an hour otherwise I too will have a grumpy baby to contend with!

ClaireM1989 · 10/11/2018 09:45

How is he feeding Pissedoffdotcom? We’re having a better day so far but that can change very quickly!! Lol

I hope you get an hour, just for some peace and quiet for you xxxx

He is wide awake 😂 lasted all of ten minutes grr. We're off for a walk in a bit so that might help.

He took about 5oz this morning - usual is 8oz so not too bad. Then had some finger food so he seems chirpy enough.

Here's hoping for a better day all round xx

rubyroot · 10/11/2018 12:43

As soon as you relax and trust that your baby will take enough to sustain themselves over the teething period you’ll be fine. Obviously use your common sense- but 19 oz sounds fine to me.

My baby just had four teeth come through at once and it’s been taking a while as still waiting for the fourth one to pop through

At one point he had ten oz a day and was eating half of what he usually does. He’s now on 16/18 and appetite for food mostly returned. He’s not eating/drinking as much as he should but I will get him weighed again when all this is over and hope it returns

rubyroot · 10/11/2018 12:44

Just to add I found it very very stressful to start with but that wasn’t good for me and baby. Think they pick up on your stress

rubyroot · 10/11/2018 12:46

Forgot to mention he was 9 1/2 months when this started- he’s now ten months
