Baby monitor. When do you stop using?

Just that really? My mum made a sarcastic comment about DS being 4 and still using a video monitor. I'd not really thought anything of it but I think I'd be paranoid without it. I then took a shower (with the monitor perched so I could see it). Do I need to chill out?

I’ve never used one.

DS has just turned 2. I can hear his crying from anywhere in the house and only leave him unsupervised somewhere totally safe like his cot.

Bluebelltulip · 08/11/2018 11:00

I've never had a video monitor only audio. Don't use it everyday now DD is nearly two, only use it if in the garden or visiting PIL as I can hear her if she needs me in our house.

PerditaMacleod · 08/11/2018 11:08

My DD was 2 last month and I am still using it, as although our house is small, if I'm downstairs with doors shut I wouldn't hear her until she was screaming the place down. When she naps at the weekend I also like to be able to see how long she's actually asleep.

I'll probably continue use it until she's in a bed that she can get out of and can safely come downstairs alone if she wants to.

My son is 4 and we still use an audio monitor at night! Without the monitor we wouldn't hear him from our bedroom if he falls out of bed or anything, so it gives me peace of mind to have it

Cutesbabasmummy · 08/11/2018 11:14

My son will be in January and we still use the audio one. Otherwise we wouldn't hear him if he cried. Turns out I can sleep through quite a lot of noise! I'll carry on until he can come and get us if he needs us.

lemsipsareshit · 08/11/2018 11:17

Still use one for my 5 year old, mainly when she's poorly. Our room is above hers and I don't hear her crying without it

PeonyTruffle · 08/11/2018 11:17

My DS is also 4 and i still have a standard monitor. It's just between our room and his, it doesn't get moved around the house.

I sometimes don't hear him in the night and we still have a gate across his door because of our deathtrap danger stairs so he can't get out if he needs us.

Reading this back it makes me look like a crazy protective mum, I'm really not!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 08/11/2018 11:25

A friend of mine still uses one for her DD and she is nine Confused.

She is an only child, and they are a bit precious. It's only a 2 bed terrace.

Fashionista101 · 08/11/2018 11:28

@Ihaventgottimeforthis oh god this will be me! Haha

I just worry that if he had a bad dream or something he'd have to be really upset for me to be able to hear him and he would stay and cry as he never ventures out of his bedroom (that's also a bit odd but I'm not complaining, I'd shit myself if he crept in through the night and was stood next to my bed)

Grin

I think keep using it as long as you want to! It's nobody else's business really.
My DCs come and get us when they need us, or more often climb into our bed, even though they're 9 & 7 Hmm.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 08/11/2018 11:48

You don't need one for a 4 year old. I have four kids and have never used one. Baby stayed in same room as us in the early weeks and when older we could hear them crying and checked on them now and again. And that was enough for us.

Fashionista101 · 08/11/2018 11:54

Hmmm I feel like I do need one. It's quite a large house so I wouldn't ever want him to get to the stage of hysterical and have to venture out to find us. Interesting how some never use them. I'd be a nervous wreck.

Ffs I'm a precious parent

DS is just nearly 7. We use a two-way audio monitor. Our house is big and his bedroom is on a different floor to ours. We'll keep using it until he tells us not too.

Fashionista101 · 08/11/2018 13:33

Good point, I did pretend to be mrs Claus and tell him he must stop asking ridiculous things and go to sleep. Guess this is another good use

Still.use for our 5 year old, but house and wouldn't hear her otherwise

Toomanytoremember · 08/11/2018 13:35

Big

BipBippadotta · 08/11/2018 18:10

I stopped using one when DS was 6 months. Never found it that useful. He's looks enough I can hear him without it.

BambooToothbrush · 08/11/2018 18:22

Dd is 2.5 and we still use a monitor when we're downstairs and she's in bed. We don't take it up with us at night because she just comes through to our room if she needs us. (She's only next door.)
