0-5 at most activities

Hi all. This sounds a bit silly but I was wondering what the general concensus was with kids going to playgroups that are over 5 years old, so say 5 and a half years/between 5 and just under 6 years?

We have just the one child who is just over 5, trying a few groups would be ideal as we’ve just moved to a new area but without a younger sibling in tow I wouldn’t want us to turn up and him deemed ‘over’ the accepted age? Hope that makes sense, thanks all

By playgroups I mean, casual ones so say local ones held in a Church hall etc for a couple hours, music group sessions, art sessions for kids etc.

Wouldn't they be at school most of the time? I imagine each playgroup is different and it's not unusual to see older siblings in the holidays.

I think if you are looking to build up a social circle you'd be better doing things through school or joining a sports club and getting their name down for Beavers for e.g.
My 6 year old would be very bored at the playgroup his little brother attends.

I would have thought most would be aimed at younger children. Activity groups tend to be in age bands separating pre-walkers, preschool and school age.

ZackPizzazz · 04/11/2018 12:52

Honestly I just can't see why you would? Kids that age are going to be uninterested in playing with preschoolers and want their peers and parents of under 3s are going to be unimpressed with big ones running around competing for toys.

It's one thing for older sibs to tag along to younger ones' activities but an over 5 should be at activities for over 5s if there isn't a younger sib.

Most groups for under 5s take place during 'school hours' so any children over the age of 4 will usually be at school. Sometimes there will be flexibility during school hols but depends on the group. My library is OK with big kids coming to the baby singing sessions during the hols but Stay and Play groups don't usually like it.

They’re usually 0-5 because children 5+ are at school.
DD1 is a November baby and between turning 4 and starting school to be honest she was completely bored at play groups as they caterered to younger children.
If you’re looking to amuse a child older than 5 you might be better looking for home Ed type groups?

Honestly most preschool groups tend to be aimed more at younger children anyway. Lots of 3-5yr olds tend to tail off going as they attend nursery or preschool more. They grow out of these groups at some point over these 2 years I think.

At 5 mine wanted to be playing with others of the same age while I sat on the sidelines or even dropped and picked up
