How exact is the 48h rule?

My 1yo ds had d&v Saturday night up to around 9pm. That he seems fine, though lacking in appetite.

If he continues to be fine, should I keep him home from nursery tomorrow (will be 36h) to be safe? (Not trying to rush him back to nursery, just planning for work next week and trying to be sensible.)

Well they don't say 48 hours because they mean 36.....

TwoGinScentedTears · 04/11/2018 12:02

I wouldn't send him, because if everyone at the nursery did that you'd just be stuck in a cycle of kids passing it round.

But, I'm not sure anyone does actually stick to it, so it's a moot point! Lots of people will say it's fine, send him. But I wouldn't.

If the exclusion period is 48h from last incidence, you'll need to keep him off until it's been 48h. We have the same rule for the children where I work.

Well my children’s primary school is 24 hours. The rule exists solely for children (my head teacher would laugh at me if I told her I wasn’t coming into school to teach my class for 48 hours after I was ill) so at 36 hours clear I’d send them.

So it's recommended 48hrs from the last bout of Sickness or D. So if it was last night you're looking at Monday night going by the recommendation. So back into

Of course use commingled sense. If he was poorly because he ate a dodgy kebab for example, he's not going to spread it it's just not agreed with him. If it was a bug or virus, then keep him off till Tuesday as you don't want anyone else to catch it.

Hope your DS feels better soon.

I do the full 48 hours and if that means they're at 42 hours or whatever at 9am on a school day, they don't go in that day.

My ds2 in particular has a speciality at puking again at around 45 hours. It's maddening.

LearningToDrive · 04/11/2018 12:08

Ok thanks, I'll keep him home.

I didn't to mean to sound obtuse - his d&v episodes were quite spread out so we've been to-ing and fro-ing a lot about whether he's getting better or not.

Aargh. I feel bad about effectively watching the clock. But he's been ill with different things throughout October, I'm running out of annual leave and have two months to go before it restarts. I'm not going to have any time of at Christmas at this rate.

Thanks for the commiserations.

That's really tough, sorry OP.

Di11y · 04/11/2018 14:06

if it was more like 45 hours I'd risk it, but not a full 12 hours short.

What makes it more confusing is that DS also has a separate cough/cold. Occasionally when he coughs he throws a little bit up. We were set to return him to nursery today, but last night he had a bit of formula and it came back up. This morning he coughed while breastfeeding and again some of it came back up. So he's off nursery for two more days 😥.

I don't think he's had diarrhoea since Saturday but as he's not eating much food we're giving him formula so his nappies are very liquid, and look just like before we started weaning.

He's otherwise really well. I have no idea if I'm being over cautious.
