Aptamil Pepti 1 - weaning with cows milk?

So I have finally moved my 5 week old ds onto aptamil pepti 1. The GP prescribed it a few weeks ago but I wasnt convinced he had a milk allergy so persevered with 'normal' formula. However his symptoms haven't got any better despite me trying comfort and anti reflux types - he continues to cry during bottle feeds, unsettled, tummy gurgling and hard. So I've reached the point where I'll just try the aptamil pepti now in the hopes it will help. My question is...what happens when you come to wean your baby? Do I try and reintroduce cows milk? The main thing that put me off trying the pepti is that I don't want my child to have to avoid dairy for the rest of his life if I start him on it 😥

You're quite a way off weaning so try not to worry about it yet. Easier said than done I know.

If your son's symptoms improve on the Pepti then you would generally be referred to a dietician who would explain the steps to reintroducing cows milk (called a milk ladder) but not until closer to one year old.

Thanks! Just thinking ahead to what effects it might have later down the line. Too much of a worrier!

Most babies do grow out of it but I’m one of the ones that didn’t. Obviously I’d prefer not to have an allergy but I don’t miss having it in my diet at all.

Honestly most kids grow out of it. My DS is nearly 4 and although the can't drink milk, he can still have the occasional ice cream and he's fine with it cooked into stuff so it doesn't really interfere too much. He just has soya milk and yogurt.

Ask for a referral to a dietician, they'll be able to help you out with weaning. My DS couldn't have anything until he was 2, and gradually he's got better.

If it is CMPI, the you'll notice the difference pretty quickly. My DS was a different child once he was no longer in pain all the time.
