Weaning - how to not waste yoghurt

DD has started weaning and seems to enjoy natural yoghurt. She'll have quite a few spoonfuls for breakfast but we still struggle to get through a small pot in 3 days (after which point the opened pot goes off).

Is there an easy way to use up the whole pot (without my having to eat up the rest)? Can it be frozen??

Yeo Valley do 150g pots, are these smaller than the ones you've been using.

Waste is part of weaning im afraid. I wouldn't be too bothered about a few spoonfuls of yoghurt.

Lidl do a pack of 4 small ones. So handy.

It's highly unlikely the yoghurt does actually 'go off' after three days. It just says use within three days on the tub to cover them. I personally would be happy to use it a few days more (basically until you have used it up)

OrcinusOrca · 28/10/2018 18:32

Tesco do a four pack for £1. Much cheaper than Yeo Valley.

ferma · 28/10/2018 19:23

Thanks everyone. I've been using the 150g pots @Vitalogy but still struggle to get through the pot! It's 50p a pop for these but will try the Lidl pots if cheaper.

I'm not sure they last much longer than 3 days... I've seen mould happening before after 5 days I think, and don't want to risk it with my baby!

Yoghurt does not go off after 3 days! I buy the 1kg pot of Greek Yoghurt and its sometimes open for weeks!

Doje · 28/10/2018 19:26

Use a clean spoon to dish out the yoghurt each time and you shouldn't get mould.

DwangelaForever · 28/10/2018 19:37

I made frozen yoghurt snacks when weaning with the excess yoghurt, yoghurt raspberries and blackberries frozen in muffin moulds. They're great for teething!

scottishma · 28/10/2018 19:44

I use it for making snack balls (oats,Greek yoghurt, coconut and blueberries) mid it all together and mound into balls, can be frozen or stored in the fridge (if they last that long!)

Lightsdown · 28/10/2018 19:46

Can't you eat what is left.of the small pot?

Bingolingo · 28/10/2018 19:47

I either finish it off myself for a dessert or freeze it into yogurt drops for when teething hits. You could add the leftover into soups/sauces too?

OhFlipMama · 28/10/2018 19:50

Freezing is a great idea.

Di11y · 28/10/2018 19:51

yes use a clean spoon each time and they last at least 5 days.

Tesco do 4 packs.

Nacreous · 28/10/2018 19:52

Yoghurt keeps for a least a week. I'd regularly keep it for 10 days after opening.

raffle · 28/10/2018 19:55

If it’s 50p a pot and you get 3 days out of it, that’s fine. Not really a huge waste?

monkerina · 28/10/2018 20:03

Freeze it into yogurt drops- little splats of yogurt on clingfilm wrapped round a chopping board or similar, stick in freezer. Handy snack at home, great for teething.

sabrinathethirtysomethingwitch · 28/10/2018 20:09

Lidl pots are 125g each. Think they are about £1.20 for 4. I like the ideas for frozen yogurt.

poppyseed2 · 28/10/2018 20:10

I open a small tub for DD in the evening, then incorporate the leftovers into my breakfast the next morning. I do second a clean spoon as well.

ferma · 28/10/2018 21:21

I must be introducing contamination by dipping the same spoon in within the same session. Will try clean spoon!

I guess it's not a financial consideration, as 50p over 3 days is nothing as a PP said. I just don't like wasting food (and don't particularly love natural yoghurt myself, unlike DD).

You're not using the feeding spoon, are you?!

Normandy144 · 28/10/2018 21:25

Buy the greek yoghurt instead of natural. The greek version much, much more creamy and much less sour than the natural yoghurt. We. Buy the 500ml tubs from tesco and the whole family eat it. Kids when they were weaning would have it with soft fruit or puree and now we all eat it with fruit, granola, nuts, seeds etc.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 28/10/2018 21:42

Just take out the amount she is likely to have into a bowl, no need for clean spoons each time.

IWantMyHatBack · 28/10/2018 22:16

Don't keep it if she's eating direct from the pot... You need to use a clean spoon and put a portion in a bowl. That applies to anything, don't use the feeding spoon in anything you intend to keep in the fridge for any length of time.

spugzbunny · 28/10/2018 22:16

Split it with her? It's the only way I can come to terms with waste!
