BabyBjorn vs Ergo baby carriers

Has anyone had both of these and can give a review of both of them? Done a lot of searching online but would like to hear real life accounts and preferences.

Thanks!

Babybjorn = crotch dangler. Bad for baby's hips and terrible support for your back.

Ergo wins every time. Though there are other brands than just Ergo to choose from if you're looking for a decent sling or carrier.

BertieBotts · 26/10/2018 13:44

Which baby bjorn? There are newer models which are just as good as the Ergo. The original one has the original problems, though.

AuroraFloyd · 26/10/2018 13:47

Oh that's good to hear, though embarrassing for me! In my defence, I haven't looked at babybjorn carriers since my eldest was a baby, 7 years ago. Glad to hear things have changed.

I had both with DS many years ago. Loved the Ergo. Wasn't a fan (either of us of the Bjorn). I remember a day trip to London when DS was 4, he was well past the buggy stage but suddenly took very ill. I used my friends Ergo and put him in the back carry to get him home...so it could last you quite a long time if you need it.

Suzysuz · 26/10/2018 13:51

I liked our Babybjorn, did use a close caboo too which is the complete opposite!
I liked the structure and clips with the babybjorn, felt nice and secure (although a bit like getting a parachute on at times until you’re used to it) Smile

unicornchaser · 26/10/2018 14:10

I'm between the Ergo 360 and BB 'one'

I know that BB used to get terrible terrible ratings for the hip health but have improved a lot on the newer models.

I've read the support (for the wearer) on the Ergo is much better than the BB so hearing if people agree with that would be helpful!
Pre pregnancy I hiked a lot with my dog so keen to get back to that level of walking again fairly quickly so need something that will provide both me and baby maximum support for wearing for a few hours at a time

The BB is supposed to be easier to get on and off and baby in and out of alone, is this true?

There really isn't much difference in the cost once you factor in the new born insert either so I guess it's just down to the support, comfort and ease of wearing I'm looking to find out Smile

We have a Baby Bjorn One Air. We got it because it had improved on the issues with the original design and because it could be used for longer in different position

I wasn't that keen when little one was tiny and inwards facing as she just seemed squished in to me but it was fine and used it a lot for dog walking etc.

I love it now that she can face out (at about four/five months) and so does she! I honestly think it's her favourite thing and we used it on holiday as well. It's comfy for us both and quite cool and easy to use

BertieBotts · 26/10/2018 14:58

TBH soft structured carriers are like jeans. What's comfy for one person won't be for another. If you can find somewhere to try them out, that's likely to be the best thing. Most baby shops/sling libraries will have weighted dolls to test with.

Caterina99 · 26/10/2018 15:40

I’ve used ergo 360 for both my kids, from newborn to toddler. Love it. Comfortable to wear and also fits both me and DH and I’m 5ft 5 and he’s 6ft 4 and massive. Babies seem to like it too.

But I’ve never used another carrier so I can’t comment if they’d be better or not

Jackshouse · 26/10/2018 16:16

Wait until your baby has been born and then hire one from a library so you can find the best fit. A lot of the good carriers are not in high street shops.

mindutopia · 26/10/2018 17:03

Of the 2, definitely go for the ergo. Even the newer bjorns are not as good as a proper ergonomic carrier for baby or for your back. There are others that are also just as good like manduca. For a new baby, buying or hiring a stretchy wrap may be your best bet. In fact, it’s worth hiring before you buy no matter what you decide on.

unicornchaser · 26/10/2018 18:13

I'm being lent stretchy wraps and the D ring slings but I hate them cos they are such a faff! Don't plan on actually using the carrier until at least a month old+ but want to know what I'm going with before hand.

Think I'm swaying towards the Ergobaby for the support, I don't have a sling library near me so will see if I can find them in mothercare or somewhere to try beforehand.

Thanks for all the replies Smile

At my local sling library I tried out a recent baby Bjorn (not sure which version but it was a hip healthy one as otherwise the sling library wouldn’t have stocked it) and ergobaby 360. By far preferred the ergobaby (which we eventually bought) as all the clips on the BB were a pain to figure out and took ages with wriggling crying baby - ergobaby took no time so minimal fussing from baby and crucially I can get him in it when he is asleep.

However when he was tiny I hired a Tula free-to-grow and loved it (this was before I bought the ergobaby)

I also loved the close caboo when he was small but it was too warm for him over the hot summer

TheChatsPyjamas · 26/10/2018 21:30

If you plan to hike definitely a carrier like the ergo so you can put baby on your back. You can carry them for years like this!

KatnissMellark · 26/10/2018 21:33

I love my ergo, used it with an insert since DS was newborn and still carry him now at 20 months, front and back-to-back he loves it. 100% better than BB.

DappledThings · 26/10/2018 22:46

I have a Beco Gemini which I Iove. Nearly 3 year old DS can still go in it on my back. Really easy three clips to put on. Excellent hip support and back support for you. Comes in loads of nice designs.

spugzbunny · 26/10/2018 22:48

I had a B.B. One I got given for free from a friend. Gave me horrendous back ache. Would not recommend!

Go to a sling library and try some on. You just don't know what you'll like and they are expensive!

Didsomeonesaybunny · 26/10/2018 22:51

I’ve got the ergo baby 360 and we love it. Have been taking baby out in it and she loves it. Once you get the hang of putting it on it’s a doddle

unicornchaser · 27/10/2018 06:23

Thanks @spugzbunny I don't think sling libraries are a thing where I am, can't see anything online about them at all.
Will see if I can find shops that stock a few options to try instead but don't remember seeing any in the big mothercare near me.....

spugzbunny · 27/10/2018 12:13

Whereabouts are you? Maybe we can find one for you? They are usually NCT run so you could also email your local NCT

mindutopia · 28/10/2018 08:22

Are you in the UK? You will certainly have a sling library near you. Ask on some local baby groups or your local NCT and see if people can point you to one.

unicornchaser · 28/10/2018 09:14

Yeah in the UK, Glasgow.
I've tried NCT page and it says there is a monthly one but doesn't give any information on dates or locations etc.

Which shops tend to stock various carriers does anyone know?

SoyDora · 28/10/2018 09:17

We had a BB One and I wasn’t a fan, despite the new design. Currently pregnant with number 3 and planning to get an Ergo. However we also have a close Caboo which I prefer to use for the first few months.

Notquiteagandt · 28/10/2018 09:18

Im only 5ft2 and the baby bjorn is far to long and big for me. The straps are too wide for my sholders and the carrier longer than my body. So the ergo wins for me.

Although I think it totally depends on your own body type etc as its such an individual thing.

RicStar · 28/10/2018 09:24

I have a bb one -which me and ds love. I had an old style ergo much prefer the bb one. Old style ergo i could never get baby in by myself (I am quite clumsy) I think an ergo 360 are good but bb one was much much cheaper and I didn’t expect to use it much but ha ds doesn't like pram much so I use it every day. Ds is long (overdue 95th centile) and I am short. Dh (also tall) can also use it fine.
