Chickenpox - what to do?

My little boy is 3 and has had chickenpox for 4 days now. It's hard to know when he will start to improve. His sleep has been terrible due to fever and itching. During the day he is not so itchy but has moments where he feels really unwell. Any advice on how I can make him feel more comfortable and speed up the healing process?

Warm baths with oats my DC had about 5 baths a day as it was the only think that made her feel a bit more comfortable.

Thanks for the tips. This might sound silly but would ordinary porridge oats work? Or would it be better to get some Avenida bath stuff?

Yes ordinary oats work (I used both) you put a couple of handfuls in a pair of tights/stocking, knot the top, to stop the oats escaping, hold under the running tap and then leave them to soak in the bath for a few mins, before adding child to water.

Some mousse called Poxclin was good and didn't dry the spots up too much like calamine lotion did. Also oat baths and bicarbonate of soda baths helped.

Keep his skin as cool as possible, ie exposed or just covered in thin cotton.
This reduces skin blood flow and limits the number of pox blisters that appear.
There was an interesting paper by a couple of GPs who did this with their own kids - dressed them in clothes with half the sleeves and legs removed, them counted vesicles on each limb. The cold limbs had dramatically fewer spots.
At 3, with any luck your son will fight it off fairly quickly and not be left with scarring, if you can limit the spots and prevent him scratching too much.

you can give him piriton too, sympathies my dd has it this week too.

Virasoothe spray worked miracles with my ds, took the itch away so quickly.

I wish I’d found it before I did. It wasn’t cheap but really worth it

Thank you everybody for all of the advice. I tried the oat bath yesterday and I think it seemed to help, his skin did seem better after a while. He has been in light cotton pjs for the whole week as they are loose and cool. I think I might pop to the chemist and check out some of the products mentioned. Think we are through the worst of it now🙂
