6 week projectile spewing at night

Hello,

I wondered if anyone could help. My baby boy is 6 weeks old and struggled a little with constipation. He is formula fed and has been taking Aptimil Comfort for the past few weeks which seemed to regulate his bowel movements. We switched back to Aptimil breastmilk substitute 2 days ago and he has been taking all his feeds but when I feed him at around 11pm he is so unsettled and has projectile vomited what looks like his whole bottle. It was coming out of his nose this evening! I cleaned him up and he took another 30ml and fell asleep. Should I be worried? He didn't seem distressed really when he did this for the past few nights but it was quite scary! I burped him throughout these 2 feeds but he was unsettled like he had a sore tummy and made a gagging face before being sick.

He did this a few times when he was a few weeks old and mentioned into the HV. She didn't seem concerned but I never feel fully reassured when we bring up our concerns with her.

I just really want to know if this is something I need to be worried about. I'm a little uneasy about going to sleep!

Maybe he has a slight intolerance? Or maybe you're feeding too much? Why did you switch back if he was getting on with the previous formula?

Maybe his already full and doesnt need all the 11pm feed or the feed at all.

How much does he drink in 24 hours?

Spitting up (dribbling) is very normal at that age. Projectile vomiting (presumably meaning with some force behind it and a larger volume?) is a little bit concerning though. If he’s settled now and doesn’t have any other symptoms (e.g., fever) then I wouldn’t worry for tonight, especially if it’s a one-off, but if he vomits that way again in the next few hours it might be good to give your GP a call. I hope you have an ok night! x

Thank you for your response!
I did think we might be feeding him a bit too much. He is feeding a lot at the moment - every 2 hours and is taking about 90ml each time. I had put it down to having a growth spurt.
We switched back because he always seemed hungry and HV had said once his bowel movements became more regular to switch back to the breastmilk substitute.

He is drinking plenty so I do think he really could be feeding too much but what do I do when he signals that he's hungry? We have tried a dummy which he takes but spits it out when he realised that he's getting no milk! He has put on quite a lot of weight since he was born but he's not a big baby!

HJE, he doesn't seem to have a temperature but he's been pretty unsettled which isn't out of the norm for him when feeding as he gets quite gassy and always looks like he's trying to poo! He felt a little warm earlier when he was feeding/unsettled but he didn't seem too concerned when he projectiled.

Thank you :) going to stay up with him tonight just to make sure he's ok!

Every 2 hours through out the night too?

Can you maybe go to 3 hourly in the day or cut out that 11pm bottle, if it seems to be that one that he brings up

Nancy268 · 25/10/2018 04:50

London, yes for the past few nights every 2 hours but he has been sound asleep for the past 3 and a half hours randomly and is still asleep! I just don't really know how-to get him into a routine. Should I let him sleep for however long (not going past 4ish hours without a feed)?

I'll try to spread out his feeding a bit more. I was just feeding him on demand and that's increased over the past few days!

I'd feed on demand and let him sleep. DD is 10 weeks and has had her fair share of projectile moments. Its usefully because she's either tried to guzzle the bottle too fast or has over fed. Unless it's happening loads I really wouldn't worry.

Tbh, I'd get it checked out at the GP asap. Probably nothing but just to rule out pyloric stenosis.

Should add that a close relly had if. The usual GP poo pood it - put it down to over anxious mother. At the next appointment they were seen by another GP who was younger / less jaded, and witnessed it first hand, and thank God he was on the ball. Not meaning to be alarmist, but best get it checked and trust your own instincts.
