Long time lurker, first time poster, after some advice!
DS (14 weeks) developed silent reflux at around 9/10 weeks. He improved immediately on infant Gaviscon - I use one sachet per 5oz bottle.
However, his naps suffered while he was uncomfortable and he currently won't/can't sleep longer than about 40-50 mins when I put him in his carry cot (he used to do 1.5-2 hours in there). Often naps are only 20-30 mins long. He no longer cries immediately when he wakes, but I just can't seem to settle him for a longer nap unless I hold him, when he'll happily sleep for 2 hours or more if I can sit still that long!
So last week I finally got to our local sling library, and borrowed a hop-tye (mei tai style) on the advice of the lady who runs the library. I bloody love it - it's comfortable and being hands-free is awesome! DS loves it too - he was tired and cranky earlier when we got home from our morning group, and was fast asleep before I'd even finished tying it.
The problem is that his reflux seems to flare up while/after he's in the carrier. He sometimes does some wet sounding/gurgly burps, which cause him to startle and wake briefly before he settles again. For the last two days I've laid him down still sleeping after untying the carrier, and he's immediately woken up crying, seemingly in discomfort. Today I held him upright until he woke, and he was fine until his next feed about 30 mins later, where he thrashed and fought just like he did before the Gaviscon. I could smell the acid in his milky dribble and on his breath
Carriers are supposed to be great for refluxy babies, so what's going on here? I'm wondering if the tightness is squashing his stomach a little, and pushing the acid up? Perhaps I need to try a different style of carrier, one that doesn't squish him against me so much? Or maybe I'm tying it too tight? My internet searches haven't revealed anyone with similar issues, so maybe I've just got a weird kid!
Has anyone got any advice on what to try next? Sorry for the essay, didn't want to leave any details out.
