To grobag or not to grobag?

So my dd is coming up to 18 months, and we need her cot for new addition so am thinking of getting one of those extendable toddler beds from IKEA. She's always been in grobags from birth, I've never used blankets so I'm really not sure what I'm supposed to be putting her in for an actual bed that she will more than likely be getting in and out herself.
A grobag doesn't seem like it would work in that she would probably fall over if she tries to walk in it or climb out of bed, but I've heard duvets aren't really recommended for that age. Also I can't see her staying in a duvet, she fidgets way too much.

Please help! What do you use for your DC?

We used a duvet but didn’t move DS out of the cot until he was 2.5! Are you sure you want to give them freedom that young?!

You need a Gro to bed. They're new and look great.

We’ve put DD in a sleeping bag with feet, made by Slumbersac. It’s fab! She can walk in it no problem but it’s still nice and cozy, and she seems to sleep better with her feet exposed

I used a sleep snuggler from johomamanbebe but as pp said it's a sleeping bag with feet.

We used a duvet but tuck it sideways so in theory it keeps her in. In practice she sticks her feet out over it every night so we've just invested in fleecy pyjamas instead!

Duvets (and thin pillows) are fine from 12 months btw.

You could get a sleeping bag with bits for their feet to come out

Welshweasel I know I've been debating whether I want her to have that sort of freedom yet, but it just seems like such a waste to have 2 cots for a matter of months. We will test it and see how it goes. Mil said DH was in a bed by about the same age but my mum said I was in my cot until about 3.

Ooh thanks I didn't even know the ones with feet existed! Knew I could rely on trusty mumsnet

Piglet thank you, I didn't know that! For some reason had it in my head it was like 2/3 years old

I put DC2 in the travel cot so DC1 could stay in the cot.

Just had a look at the sleep snugglers on jojo, they look perfect for dd actually

We use walk in sleepers from Mothercare - yet another sleeping bag with feet!

And all 3 of my DC moved from cots to beds between 18 months - 22 months because they started trying to climb out of their cots. Or fell off the cot trying while climbing out in the case of DC3. So moving a child to a bed at 18 months doesn’t seem excessively early to me.

We have the Ikea toddler duvet for our 16MO. DD has a cot bed but it’s still in full cot mode with the bars up. She does (mostly) stay under the duvet.

davisday · 21/10/2018 14:33

I used a duvet when they moved to a bed.

Shoobydooby09 · 21/10/2018 20:10

I used a duvet when mine moved to a junior bed but they were about 2.5. However, I had the bed against the wall with the safety rail and it meant they couldn't actually climb out of the bed at first. My eldest loved the grobags, my youngest used to do everything to get out of it. Once he turned 1 he had a lightweight junior duvet on his cot.

Travel cot for the new addition?
