Baby wearing ...

Hi all looking for advise .... I brought a baby bjorn mini so I could go out without the buggy (5 week old dd)
I went out yesterday while dd was wearing a sleep suit only and I felt as if she got too warm due to my body heat plus the carrier is quite padded.
What are babies meant to wear in these things? Last thing I want is for my dd to be too hot or too cold

I put mines in a vest, sleepsuit and cardigan with a hat on, or trousers
, top & socks in place of a sleepsuit.

Your not really meant to have them in carriers in sleepsuits or pramsuits because it causes toes/feet to be restricted I only did it because baby is only little and the legs are too long.

Advice I got was that the carrier is counted as a layer and they should be wearing what you're wearing. So if you go out in a top, jumper and coat they might need a vest and coat, skip the jumper. I find something lightweight with a windproof layer over the top is good to keep mine LO warm enough. Always have layers and feel the back of their neck to get an idea of temperature.

I have 3 different slings/carriers - my OH and I use different ones and they were given to us.

Anyway the advice from all of them is they count as one layer of clothing. (In fact the slings state they count as a layer of clothing for you as well.)

So if for example it's warm they are fine in just a vest. If the weather is like it was yesterday then having a babygro with vest underneath is enough. You just need to be careful when on public transport, in cafes etc where you are staying a while that they don't get too hot. In those cases you have to take them out of the sling/carrier and hold them.

Oh and very few babies keep socks on so I don't know where the advice not to use babygros and pramsuits with carriers comes from. I've lived in very cold countries where they are paranoid about child safety and have friends' from those countries who dress their babies in them if necessary. You just need to ensure they are not too small for them.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. They’ll always be a bit on the warm side out and about because obviously your hand has got colder because your out. Make sure you check the back of the neck or chest because this is much closer to their core temperature rather than arms or head.

My little boy is a warm baby and you feel his forehead and your like omg he’s getting a fever, check his neck and he’s fine!

@bluebug45 the advice comes from protecting babies knees and feet and keeping them in a safe position.

If you think about it if your stood up straight legged your trousers go down to your ankles, you sit down with your knees are bent at 90 degrees your trousers ride up to your ankles and if you where to bend your knee so it's higher than your bum (ie frog position that baby is in for a carrier) it would ride up at the bottom even further. If its riding up and covered the foot it's would be tight causing the toes to curl and the knees too be not in correct position.

For a baby to comfortably wear a babygro in it the legs would need to be too long.

There is lot of into online about it.

Ultimately you put your baby in what you want, I used a pram suit/babygro with my first for months before I found this out so only saying to give others a heads up with this baby now they've gained length I won't be using anything closed footed.

@2lilcherubsbso you don't put your baby in tights?

(And yes my daughter's baby gros are too long.)

Raviolisauce · 21/10/2018 21:54

@bluebug45 I haven't in a carrier but tbh I'd have thought they'd be OK since they are very stretchy. Haven't given it much thought.
I'm not attacking you or anything just directed my response to you as you said you didn't know where that advice came from
