So why is it ok?

So, I have just returned from a visit to the doctors, it's was confirmed I have tonsillitis, so feeling crappy any and don't have time for nonsense people.

My DS is 14months old and is happily playing away with the little box toy thing they have in the waiting area when A woman walks in with her 5month old baby in pram and 5 yr old waking with her.
So she sits down and without any other comment or even eye contact and smile she just says
"friggin ell, he's bloody tiny isn't he"
so I say "yes he is on the smaller side but I'm only petite so not expecting him to be massive"
so he runs off over to lift and I walk back holding his hand , she then says
"he's far to small to be waking " so I just say
" yeah he's been walking since he was 10 months old " then he goes back to playing and she says,
"you know I could get my little girl out the pram as she'd be friggin bigger and she's only 5 months "
I reply
"he's is in a 12 to 18 month old jumper" she then says
"I know but it's just bloody ridiculous, isn't it "

How are you to respond to these people.???.?genuinely that's my question and when has it become acceptable to make comments like that about a small child but I'm sure if I said "you child is so fat it's just ridiculous"I'm sure people would say that was rude.

So all I want really is a good response for the future that's not rude ????? as it does happen often, as he probably still does wears 9 to 12 month ( the jumper was from boots but fitted him in a bigger size ) but just makes it clear I don't want a conversation based around how small my child is lol

Wow she sounds like a rude idiot! Maybe she’s paranoid her baby is too big! Either way, it’s none of her business how big your DS is, I wouldn’t get into a debate with people in future I would just reply with a vague “hmmm” and change the subject to something mundane like how sunny/cloudy/wet/cold the weather is today if you don’t want to seem so rude as to stop talking and ignore, or feign nappy emergency or something else to give you an excuse to walk away!

Yeah I hate this stupid commentary on babies being small. My DD often called tiny. One woman at a baby group in particular had a way of saying how much bigger her son was than my DD which felt like a slapdown.

Personally I choose not to engage and just do an awkward tight lip smile instead as though what they’ve said isn’t very inspiring (because it’s not!) and edge away Wink

I have a tiny 14 month old who walked at ten months too Grin

I’ve had many months of the “isn’t he small?” comments and it’s so irritating.

You have my sympathy and that lady was incredibly rude.

The other way round is so annoying too!
My 14m old son is tall and looks older in the face than he is. Hes not quite walking yet. Ive gad countless comments from people saying how big he is, about his walking etc

People should keep their opinions to themselves!

Ugh I don't know why this is OK it's like then you're pregnant and suddenly it's ok to comment on the size of your bump.

My dd is 5 and a half months and nearly 16lb I'm constantly being told 'oh isn't she big' 'she looks much older than my dd' 'she's very solid isn't she'
I never thought she was big it got to the point I was worrying something was wrong.
It's just rude.

My daughter was tiny and bald so looked like she was about 4 months old when she was twice that age. However she got teeth early and was an early talker. Used to totally freak people out when this tiny bald thing would start chatting away (baby talk but some obvious words) and then give a big toothy smile.
It's just mum small talk. Don't worry about it.

stiltonontoast · 20/10/2018 10:15

Its definitely rude to comment on it to that extent.

I have a big baby, he's 8 months and 24lb, he is just big. People love to comment on it "he's solid", "what a big boy!" etc which I don't mind to a degree, especially if they are friends but I absolutely will not tolerate them using the F word! (fat) my MIL called him "a tank" the other day and I had to tell her off.

Isadora2007 · 20/10/2018 10:16

It’s just the way some people are and you need a thicker skin. Sorry, but she didn’t even ask how old he was, so how could she say he’s tiny? Clearly she is just one of these people who feel the need to say something, and with babies it is often size. My littlest is a redhead and I lost count of the number of comments on his hair- often ones with no sensible answer “oh look at that hair- it’s really red isn’t it?” (Erm...yes? No? Wtf am I meant to say to that) Mostly I just nod and agree and then ask about their children to change the subject.
I’ve had both sides too as my girls are small but my boys are big. I once got asked “are you STILL feeding (breast) him??” About ds1 even though he was only 5 months old... he was a big baby.
Smile and nod...and change the subject.

bourbonbiccy · 20/10/2018 22:18

@QueenofmyPrinces oh completely same boat then. I'm not usually offended, I suppose bored of the comments now is more accurate. I bet every time he toddled around every single person would make some comment about the "shock" of such a tiny baby walking....yawn.

As others have said, some people just feel the need to say something and don't mean it offensively. But in this scenario I just seemed strange and offensive to refer to it so many times.
