My Swaddlebees don't work??!! Anyone else?

Love the fit / ease of use / look of my swaddlebees (stuffables with hemp) but they leak! Within an hour wee is all over DD's clothes and usually over me (she is 8 weeks today). They fit her fine - nice and tight around legs but as a nappy they are as useful as a chocolate fireguard ! The website who I bought them from said they needed to be washed 8 times before they were absorbent - which I have done BUT they still let that wee come through. Do they work for anyone else or should I give up on them??

no I haven't tried them but are they all in ones? or do they have a wrap? Are you stuffing them enough? Usually if they are leaking it because they are holding too much liquid already or they are wicking. You haven't washed them with fabric softener have you?

zazas · 15/06/2007 12:21

They are stuffables - they have an outer bit and then I stuff them with a shaped hemp insert that is specific to them. Not holding too much liquid - usually has only just weed and out it comes. Not sure what you mean about wicking and no fabric conditioner in the house

I think they need a wrap, don't they? or is the outer PUL? Is the wee coming through the material?

wicking is when the edging of the wrap becaomes so absorbed it leaks, but sounds like you have all in ones so that shouldn't be the prob. You might have a big wetter (DD), and therefor need more padding or a different kind of nappy. I have a big wetter and I use tots bots bamboozles and motherease wraps. Sounds like the website you bought from isn't giving you much help or support? Who did you buy from and how many did you buy?

runnervt · 15/06/2007 13:13

It sounds like it might be a similar problem to one I had where the nappies (fluffles) didn't absorb at all and the wee just flowed out! In my case it was because I was using too much nappy rash creamso the nappies were repelling wee but I reckon the same thing can happen when they're new. I used the washing routine suggested here
and it solved the problems.

I think you have bought the pocket hemp ones and these need a wrap....which is why they seem useless Can you do a link to the page you bought them from (if you bought them online that is!)

zazas · 15/06/2007 13:53

I think I have the wrap and I don't know what PUL means

DD is not a big wetter as far as I can tell and it is from her first wee that they leak. I use totsbots bamboozles with motherease and nature baby wraps and I have no probs - nor with the fleece ones that I use.

No nappy cream either!

I only have 2 but they are expensive!

Actually rereading the stuff on the website (link below) it does say it will only last 1 1/2 - 2 hours and they don't hold much wee either

Maybe they just aren't meant to be...... better get shopping for something new

oh zazas! i thought you had a swaddlebees like me i.e normal nappy..the pockets DO need a wrap, that´s exactly what the problem is! (and also what makes them a weird kind of pocket)

maveta · 15/06/2007 13:56

do you put a wrap over them then? pul is the plastic like ME wraps..

quokka · 15/06/2007 14:06

I think they might be better for potty training or light wetters for a longer period. I really liked these ones but as ds was a big wetter I went for the tots bots bamboozels - never had a aprob with them and he can go 2-3 hrs without a nappy change.

quokka · 15/06/2007 14:08

try selling them on here or I think babykind do buy back as well? They will suit someones lo just not yours

bagpuss · 15/06/2007 14:11

You don't need a wrap with these ones. We have one and to begin with it was fine but I ended up having to put an extra insert in ours eventually as the nappy wicked around the legs. Hemp has quite a lot of oil in it so the inserts do need to be washed quite a bit to strip the fibres so that they can become absorbant. Also, hemp doesn't absorb as quickly as other fabrics and so you may find that the wee comes out before it has had a chance to soak into the insert. Helen at Babykind suggested I try wrapping a microfibre cloth around the insert before stuffing as the microfibre would soak up the wee before the hemp locked it away. You can get microfibre cloths from tesco - 3 for 99p. HTH

Hi maveta! Not sure what I have now??!!! But I do know that I can look after 5 kids and run our company but can't for the life of me figure out real nappies Honestly the choices have spun me in circles but I am going on out of stubborness and principle and I will just have to live with the wet clothes - mine that is not my DD's !!!!!!!!!

Having said that DD has just done a 4 day build up poo and it all stayed nice and contained in a modern baby cotton nappy - so I am doing something right

ok these ones don't need a wrap, how much soap are you using to wash them with, a build up of soap can sometimes cause a problem

zazas · 15/06/2007 14:16

Bagpuss - I think that is what is happening - it runs out before it has absorbed. Might try the mirco cloth thing or just stick to the totsbots ones - life is too busy here these days to faff too much

Someone else with the problem! Mine fit great, look fab but leak at just one pee. It seems to come through the stitching on the leg and then once the outside is wet it spreads. Been washed countless times - never use softener but the fabric inside (which feels great) is useless - water just runs off. I often take out the stuffing and it's virtually dry - while dd is soaking!

Think I was swayed by style - If only they worked!

zazas · 15/06/2007 22:32

jeanjeanie - yes that is exactly my experience! The insert is dry yet DD clothes are soaked as are mine! Hmm, shame they don't work as well as they look as they are a great fit aren't they?

Mine have been fine, lasted ages... i think its all down to baby shape

CarGirl · 15/06/2007 22:56

stuffables never worked with my rapid wetters either - shame!
