Working mum's dagger to heart

DS1 has just started reception and we had parents evening last night. All very positive and I'm so proud of him for settling in and getting on with it etc but they showed us a little journal they had created with quotes of things DS1 said. Of daddy he had said " daddy likes playing with my toys." Of mummy he said "mummy doesn't like to play with any toys. She likes to work." Ouch. I do have a demanding job and a commute. Couple of weekends recently I had to work from home at the weekend. I think that's what he had in his mind. I feel so awful though that this has obviously affected him. Have other mums experienced this? How have you dealt with it ? I have resolved to keep the weekends sacred going forward but I have taken it as a sign I need to change jobs.

I think it's good for DS to see me/his dad working sometimes. It won't do him any harm.

In his mind he probably thinks you do enjoy it and it's like a game to you. I understand how you must have felt though. Bloody Mum guilt. It's such a difficult balance.

Meh - I work part time and both dc love to play ‘mummy working on her computer’ they think it’s interesting, work is another setting to them that they are trying to make sense of. Also the mummy in their games is always very busy and tells the children to be quiet a lot...

Always plenty to make you feel bad if you let it!
