Hand foot & mouth?

My DD 15 months has hand foot & mouth. Diagnosed by the GP yesterday, it's been awful. She isn't sleeping, her mouth is constantly open due to the painful blisters & isn't eating/sleeping much. We're only on day 2. Just read online it can last from 7-10 days 😩 I'm so bored already I'm going stir crazy, she seems well enough to visit the park or something an hour or so after calpol but I don't want to be responsible for passing it on especially when the sores are so obvious round her mouth. Realistically how long does it last & when did you go out? Thanks!

Chamomile lotion if it turnes to a rash and neuroffen not Calpol. Sorry it's awful I feel your pain but the worst will pass after 3 days. Hang in there.

You will also need medication for sore throat because that's very painful.

Oh we've just been through this, it's miserable. Is she eating and drinking? We found natural yoghurt, frozen lollies were quite soothing. Alternated calpol and ibuprofen.

Avoid parks at the minute, it's really contagious. We did go for lots of walks in woodland areas away from people as the house can be quite isolating.

Sounds similar to us - the scabs on the face actually led to impetigo so we needed antibiotics which helped the scabbing. Overall it lasted about 7 days before we could return to nursery etc.

My little girl lasted about 4 days poorly and then a few more days for all blisters to go. She loved having some cold sudocrem rubbed into her feet and hands

My children had it once. DD7 and DD5 had a couple of spots on their palms and one or two on the tops of their feet too. Honestly we hadn't realised they had anything for over a week because it had t bothered them one bit. It was only when a fellow school mum was talking about her poorly son and him having the spots that I realised the random 5 or 6 spots on my DDs wasn't little heat lumps or possible flea bites from visiting a petting farm the previous week. I popped round to reception and spoke to the office staff who told me it wasn't a "keep them off school" kind of virus anyway.

Take your DD to the park. Just pop some gloves on and don't let her chew on the monkey bars and she'll not pass anything on.

Attached is a pic of the information sheet displayed in schools. HFM requires no days off.

Last time ds had it it lasted literally 2 days then he was fine!
He’s got it AGAIN and has has a temp for two days, and now the spots are coming out. Praying it’s mild this time 😩

Beautifulblue · 19/10/2018 13:28

Thanks everyone, I would say she's just as bad today (day 3) the spots are noticeably worse but I'm hoping that's where they're scabbing over/healing. Thanks for the advice re; chamomile lotion we need a walk so will walk to the pharmacy, will also discuss ibuprofen with them doctor did say to persist with paracetamol unless I think she really needed something stronger but tbh I think she's suffered enough poor thing. The sleeping has been horrendous it's like having a new born again! It's obviously waking her up then she feels too crap to fall back to sleep. Glad to see it's been short lived for most of you, fingers crossed tomorrow we see an improvement!

Good luck, I can honestly feel your pain, I heard more crying in 3 days than I had heard all together in a whole year. He has gone back to waking every two hours since having it and two bottles instead of one. But honestly as soon as I put chamamile lotion on him after around 3 hours of trying to get him to sleep the third night and he slept within 10 minutes and a billion times better. His skin was just really irritating him. I had a rash on my legs a few years ago and I remember I couldn't sleep because it was so irritating my boyfriend went to buy me chamamile lotion and or my worked amazing so it's saved me twice now. But I really never find Calpol any help and th when I take paracetamol it's no help compared to neuroffen. I really hope its over for you soon. But it is highly contagious I honestly would try and keep her away from other children my nephew passed it to my son literally just by walking past him one day as I was leaving my son pushed him as we passed as you do and that was it. I would honestly not chance passing to anyone not even my worst enemy.

Ahhh my DS 10 months also has it, diagnosed today. I am hoping that because he has been off his food for a few days then that means we’re further along than I thought?? Day 2 of spots anyway & really hoping they start to calm down soon as he is not sleeping at all Sad

badsquaremile · 19/10/2018 21:51

Chamomile lotion is a good tip though! Will buy some tomorrow

ohdeardeardear · 19/10/2018 21:59

DS just getting over it. I alternated between calpol and nurofen. I also put some ambesol on the ones in his mouth which settled him for half an hour.

doodledott · 19/10/2018 22:19

DS diagnosed last Saturday. We ended up being sent to A&E by the out of hours GP as his temp was 40 and wouldn't come down with Nurofen or Calpol.

I really feel your pain. It's been the most dreadful week but he's finally getting back to normal. He didn't eat from Saturday until Wednesday though. Maybe 2 yoghurts in all that time. The spots are slowly fading but he was absolutely covered in them. All of his legs, arms, face, bottom. The only place without spots was his torso.

What a horrible infection! I hope your little one is better soon!

Have you tried a bit of teething gel to help the mouth ulcers?
