How to manage the mess of a toddler??

DD is almost 4. Despite the fact that we have a decent sized house I feel like it's over run with toys!

She's currently in the smallest bedroom but soon moving to a bigger room which will hopefully help but I'd like to try and cut down all her stuff.

In my living room I currently have a dolls house and a large ottoman fulled with stuff and other things piled on top.

The (small) dining room has another ottoman filled with stuff plus her dolls pram.

In her bedroom we've squeezed in a toy kitchen, ikea kallax unit and rocking unicorn (as well as her bed, wardrobe, drawers). It's a tight squeeze hence why she's moving.

We have a garage but once things are in there, that's where they pretty much stay - I'm not organised enough to rotate toys. She also still has toys in there from last Christmas that she hasn't played with.

With Christmas and her birthday coming I'm dreading it - we have a large generous family plus she's having a party so will no doubt get some gifts from friends too. I feel bad giving stuff away especially when it was a gift but the reality is, she has more stuff that she an possibly play with and tends to play with the same stuff i.e. those annoying shopkins that her gran keeps buying her.

Give me your tips for keeping on top of it!

Maybe try and sort and donate some stuff. And for Christmas and her birthday maybe ask family for 'experience' gifts such as gift vouchers to a zoo, cinema tickets or magazine/comic subscription?

We keep a large box of older toys in shed for outdoor playing on dry days. I dont mind then if the toys get mucky or damaged, plus they are a novelty because they are not seen about the house day-day.
My brother keeps boxes of toys in the attic ( several kids) and rotates them with toys in the house. He says its like xmas morning everytime he swaps a box for the attic - kids so excited to see “ new toys “ from attic!!

first declutter anything too young. you need to only have as many toys in the ottoman that can fit and be accessible and easy to tidy so there's nothing at the bottom that's never played with. or as I have done, put a small selection out in really useful stuff boxes and use the ottoman as the toys that aren't played with. just 1 musical toy, 1 building blocks type toy etc. easy to swap over as all there.

it's really worth trying to rotate toys - fill a couple of plastic boxes and put them in the loft or garage, get them out when existing toys are getting boring, not too crazy hard.
