Age you'd allow a bikini?

DD is 11 and desperately wants one. I just know her younger sister (7) will want to 'match'. Thanks.

My 7 year old wore one this summer that was essentially just a crop top and knickers - not a triangle style bikini if you see what I mean. I think it looked ok and age appropriate for her.

OhComeOnRon · 16/10/2018 12:14

Ermmm 11 year old yes, don't think id put one on my 7 year old though. I hate bikinis on kids.

NorthEndGal · 16/10/2018 12:15

My dd was in a 2 piece right from babyhood. She has always been exceptionally tall and slender and no one piece suit was long enough without billowing open around the leg holes and neck.
People judged, I'm sure, but they would have judged a lot harder if she kept exposing herself by accident!

Whenever she wants one!

Seeline · 16/10/2018 12:19

I really don't see the issue of bikinis on younger children.
In any case mine was always in a uv top when on beach holidays, and it was always too cold to wear them in the UK Grin
I was more concerned with my 14yo DD wearing one on holiday this year and the looks that she was attracting (not a revealing bikini, nor is she particularly developed).

Tankini for younger one bikini for older?

naichick · 16/10/2018 12:24

I let my dd 7 wear one this year but it wasn’t a triangle one, and this is coming from someone who can’t stand bikinis on kids! I think it does depend on the style?

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 16/10/2018 12:24

I think bikinis are fine for any age, but I think it depends on the style. Obviously nothing very revealing or sexualized like a cut out type, thong or the tiny triangle tops.

IDontWantToBuildASnowman · 16/10/2018 13:57

Any age you like! My daughter has worn them from very young, initially often just the bottoms on their own, but from about 7yrs has worn full set or bottoms with rashy vest top. Really don't understand the fuss unless its a highlight sexualised one with thong etc.

Barbayagar · 16/10/2018 13:58

When I was young and pre-puberty and living abroad girls would just wear bikini bottoms and not feel any embarrassment, so much more comfy than wearing a tankini for no real reason.

Seniorschoolmum · 16/10/2018 14:01

Thinking back, even in the 80s, we had sturdy bikinis by age 7.

SodTheBloodyLotOfThem · 16/10/2018 14:04

DD wore bikini bottoms and a rash vest on holiday. Some kids bikinis are quite sweet, there's nothing inappropriate about these Boden ones, and they're much easier for popping to the loo.

CheshireSplat · 16/10/2018 14:05

DD had one in the summer and she was 6. The top was more like a crop top. I tend to verge on the stricter side of parenting, but I don't have a problem with a "sturdy" bikini as a previous poster described it. She had to wear her rash vest or swimming costume at sunburny times though. Bikini was for after 4pm...

Maryann1975 · 16/10/2018 14:05

My dds both prefer tankinis to any other type of swimwear. I think they find them easier to get on and off and if they need the toilet it’s far easier to pull the bottoms off than a whole swimming costume. We struggled to get them on the high street this year, don’t know why? The reason we opt for tankinis rather than bikinis is because there is less skin exposed to have to put sun cream on.

SnuggyBuggy · 16/10/2018 14:07

I think the crop top ones are ok. I was so skinny prepuberty, I kind of wish I'd made the most of it

64BooLane · 16/10/2018 14:13

DD (8) wears Boden bikinis sometimes and I don’t see the issue. More practical for changing/going to the loo. The ones we’ve had are clearly garments designed for children and they don’t present as sexualised or age-inappropriate.

I think it’s actually a lot trickier for older girls to wear them without attracting unwanted attention.

Branleuse · 16/10/2018 14:27

i think my dd had one at about 5

whats the big deal. Its swimwear, not lingerie

BertramKibbler · 16/10/2018 14:29

I hate little girls in Bikinis. Mine are only babies but I think I’d be ok with it once they’re teenagers

buscaution · 16/10/2018 14:35

Eh? Age to allow a bikini?

What a bizarre thing to have to 'allow'

It's a bikini Confused

RiverTam · 16/10/2018 14:40

would you allow your 7 year old to wear anything else designed to support breasts?

RiverTam · 16/10/2018 14:40

that was to buscaution

ileclerc · 16/10/2018 14:41

Mine have worn them since toddler, well mostly just the bottoms at that age tbh. Know they wear top and bottoms but nit triangle type, personal preference I don't like them on kids.

AnnaNimmity · 16/10/2018 14:44

I allowed my dd (age 6) a bikini from Boden this year. There's no suggestion it looks like a grown up one - it had a crop top with pom poms on. She loved it. (I let her choose one from there).

When my older dds were 11 they were all too self conscious for a bikini. (that self-consciousness has completely disappeared now a few years later!).

slapbitchface · 16/10/2018 14:49

Never seen a problem with children in bikinis - it's a belly for goodness sake. 7 is more than old enough

buscaution · 16/10/2018 14:56

Eh?
