Hi Everyone i'm new here.
i'll tell you a little about myself and my dilemma!
I started a diploma in childrens nursing in January 2007. It has been something i thought i wanted to do for a long time. I had to defer for a year previous as i fell pregnant with the youngest.
So anyways i travelled the 40 miles there and back every day for 6-7 weeks just getting into it, done all the boring introduction parts and looking forward to 1st placement.
Then i unfortunately in February 13th to be exact had a serious car accident on the wy to uni. I was driving and i had to be cut out of car both car and bus!!! Were write offs.
I was very very lucky, i came out with a broken femur and shattered knee cap, head injuries but i am still alive.
The university were very good have intermitted until January 2008. However i have to have a medical before i return and really don't think i am going to be fit enough. My knee was totally shattered and the have wired it back together. I am having physio every week to try and improve my bend. At the moment it bends to just under 90 degrees and is very painful. I did my back in a couple of weeks ago as can't bend properly and have been picking my nearly 1 year old off the floor.
We have now moved house to West Midlands and therefore the original university i was at is too far away and they have one in our town centre. I can't just transfer as i thought i have to totally reapply and i am really considering whether it is worth it! Do you think they will even look at me with my injuries? Going through the whole interview stages again i just don't know if i have the strength!
Any advice would be very gratefully recieved.

Will you recover more fully over time? Nursing is a very physically demanding profession unfortunately. Can you leave it for now and apply again in a couple of years?

Sorry to hear about your accident. It must have been frightening and hard to cope with rehabilitation and young children. Sounds like you have the determination to get there in the end though!

which uni in the midlands?

Im at bham uni doing nursing- it is soooooo physically demanding, i really dont know how uni would look at your health problems.

How do you really feel about re-applying. Do you feel ready or need more time. You could apply now and may not be offered a place for a year or so anyway as a lot of colleges fill up their places in advance.

I would speak to the college admission tutor and they may answer any questions you have.

Nursing Standard have just run feature on nurses with disabilities, and although this probably doesnt apply to you it may give you some hope that there are people who train when they have even lost limbs. You can read the articles online.

HTH (btw am 2nd year nursing student who had to drop a year and go back so I know its a hard decision )
