For babies to have comforters in the cot? DSs sleep has come a long way and massively improved (hes now 4m). Hes falling qsleep on the bottle at night which for now i dont care about but long term i know we will need to change. Id like to start giving him something like a comforter or specific teddy at bedtime so he starts associating it with sleep with the long term aim to get him to go to bed awake and self settle. What age is it safe to do this?

One of mine had a small square taggie that had little tags round it.

Northernbeachbum · 13/10/2018 12:55

Hes got a few things that we could use including one of those, i just know hes supposed to have an empty cot so wondered what age is deemed safe to give things like that

I waited until DS was 1, but maybe a muslin under him for now?

I wouldnt have anything in the cot until atleast 2 years old

Northernbeachbum · 13/10/2018 13:15

Im sure mine had the taggie from a few months old. It wasnt big or thick enough to cause a problem. They can have a pillow and duvet from 1 year so i don't know why you'd wait until they were 2

IWouldLikeToKnow · 13/10/2018 13:58

It's recommended to wait till 12 months as far as I know. But a muslin comforter should be ok as it's breathable

Lazypuppy · 13/10/2018 16:50

My 9 month old has had a comforter for naps since 5 months old

Cosmoa · 13/10/2018 22:33

My baby is breastfed.. She's going to be 5 months on Tuesday. Normally I feed her to sleep but the last few nights she's been struggling as her first two teeth are coming through so she's just been crying even after feeding. So after getting fed up I just walked around the room in the dark with her until she was calm and then I put her in the crib even though she was still awake. To my surprise she has starting to whimper a little but when self settled!!! I've been watching her do so on our video monitor.

Basically.. You may not need to worry about a comforter. And an empty cot is a safe cot.. However I've just read that a soft toy is okay at 6 months.

How about maybe just one of those long limed thin bunnies? Rather than a square that can cover the babys face...

Caterina99 · 14/10/2018 00:34

I was told 6 months. Or once they were able to roll themselves

Northernbeachbum · 14/10/2018 09:40

@cosmoa he is capable of it, but just does fall asleep at the moment with the bottle in his mouth. We know eventually its a habit to break but for now hes come so far we're happy as it is

We have a jellycat rabbit we could use or those small comforters with a bear attached. But sounds like we need to wait a bit longer

Mine were sleeping in a full size single bed with duvet and pillow plus whatever cuddly toy they chose to take to bed with them way before they were two!
I think we kept an empty cot until around 12 months.

Lazypuppy · 14/10/2018 09:55

@LondonLassInTheCountry

I wouldnt have anything in the cot until at least 2 years old

Why is a 2 year old still in a cot? Past 12 months they can have duvet and pillows, and all the toddlers i have known have been into a normal bed by 18months at the latest

dementedpixie · 14/10/2018 09:57

My ds was in a cot until 2 and a half so there is nothing unusual about a 2 year old being in a cot

SoyDora · 14/10/2018 10:15

It’s completely normal for a 2 year old to still be in a cot. It’s also completely normal for an under 2 to be in a bed. Whatever works for you.
A bare cot at 2 wouldn’t have worked for my DC though. They hated the sleeping bags past about 15 months and felt too restricted. They could climb out of cots. They were both toilet trained before 2 so needed access to the toilet.

DS had a comforter from 5months old. He had it from 3 months when he was awake, from 4 months he would fall asleep with it and then I would remove it, but at 5 months he needed it to stay asleep. He would hold the ears all night.
My friends DS had a muslin they used as a comforter around 6months.

Northernbeachbum · 14/10/2018 16:04

Im leaning towards 6 months then from what youve all said. Thank you Smile

DS is 6 1/2 months and has had a comforter since about 4 weeks. He falls asleep snuggling it and I take it away when he's asleep
