Help me choose a preloved all terrain buggy?

I need to get DS a new buggy, he's 8 months and his old joie travel system is now rickety as hell and its crap in the winter - leaves forever getting jammed in the wheels.

I really want an all terrain, proper tyre, 3 wheel type! We're outdoorsy and walk the dog every day and would love to be able to go across fields etc without having to stick to paths.

Budget is limited, as we're total paupers so thinking preowned is the way to go. I could stretch to £150 tops.

Whats my best option?

100% got to be Out n About Nipper SPORT

stiltonontoast · 13/10/2018 10:05

Thanks @WeShouldBeFriends looking on ebay the sport seems more expensive than the 360, is there much benefit to the giant wheels?

Mountain buggy that has a fixed wheel at the front. Go for an older version as these were better made. Couple on ebay ATM here or here

Baby jogger city mini GT? Not sure what price they go for second hand but ours is fab on rough paths, gravel etc

overmydeadbody · 13/10/2018 10:19

Out n about nipper (I have the double and it's good enough)

Or if you can find it cheap, the out n about nipper sport. I have this too for running and it is amazing, but I use it to run through fields, if you're not running the nipper should be fine

overmydeadbody · 13/10/2018 10:20

I agree with a pp about the mountain buggy ones too, the old versions are very good.

SleepyMcEdie · 13/10/2018 10:22

Baby Jogger city mini GT. There is a second hand selling group on Facebook for baby joggers and a Gt settle for around £100-200 depending on age.

RandomMess · 13/10/2018 10:24

Ebay "Bob running pushchair" £200 with best offer Birmingham.

Sell off the car seat, base etc.

Most amazing 3 wheeler ever and have had a nipper 360, mountain buggy as well

WeShouldBeFriends · 13/10/2018 10:34

I think the big wheel is critical if you're off-roading. I can get it over giant ruts in the field, the beach, thick mud, it really is amazing. My friend has a 'similar' buggy without the big wheels and she thought we'd be able to walk together in the woods etc but hers just can't manage it.

RandomMess · 13/10/2018 10:42

Ah just checked that Bob one is the model with small rear wheels not the revolution model I had Sad

ineedwine99 · 13/10/2018 10:44

I have a mountain buggy terrain, handles anything!

llangennith · 13/10/2018 11:39

I found the Nipper handle too low.
Mountain buggies are brilliant and usually about £100 on eBay.
Best buggy we had was a Mothercare three wheeler called Giraffe (I think). Big wheels, option to have the front wheel fixed or free, very easy to push, high handle.
Maclaren MX3 is similar but may have been discontinued.

mindutopia · 13/10/2018 16:33

We have a baby jogger summit x3, which is on its second baby now, and I love it. No idea how it compares to others or what the cost would be secondhand, but it’s a solid buggy that we’ve put through a lot of abuse and it’s stood the test of time.

BeeMyBaby · 13/10/2018 17:35

I previously used an out an about but found it difficult to fold which meant it was good if you never needed to use a car in a rush or go on public transport but unuseable if you did. I looked on which and it recommended (and gave a higher rating to the britax b motion 4 than the out and about) and even with 4 wheels it's better- it's gives it better stability over very rocky ground. I'm now in a country with dirt roads and very rocky hilly terrain and it really is fantastic. They are about £450 new but I picked mine up on eBay for £50 (the handle was a bit battered so needed some tape over it, definitely worth a £400 saving).

stiltonontoast · 14/10/2018 08:23

Can anyone give me more info on the old style mountain buggy with the fixed wheel? I can't imagine how it would handle.

Personally I loath a front fixed wheel...

Fine for really tough terrain where you can't use a swivel but over grassy fields and about town hideous.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 14/10/2018 18:44

Baby Jogger Elite has done well for us. Doesn't work so well in dry sand with a heavy toddler we found out, but I'm not sure anything would be?
We bought one brand new for £400 and one second hand for £130 so definitely achievable in your budget.
I keep thinking about selling ours as they hardly get used but I can't do it as they're just so good Blush

profpoopsnagle · 15/10/2018 20:24

You do have to handle a fixed wheel differently to a swivel. The easiest way to turn is to apply a little pressure down on the handle to lift up the front wheel by a few centimetres and turn the front wheel of the pram to point where you want it to go. Obviously, you also try to anticipate where you want to steer the pram in the first place! Granted, it's not so easy in some shops etc but if you want to walk at a bit of a pace I found it superior to a swivel wheel, even when locked.

I had a mountain buggy breeze, which was a smaller and lighter version of the terrain, so that's a model worth looking out for. Folds smaller too.

profpoopsnagle · 15/10/2018 20:26

One on gumtree

dontforgetbilly · 15/10/2018 20:29

Been a long time since I looked, but I'd definitely suggest one with a fixable front wheel, country walks are impossible without it but great to be able to switch to swivel wheel for town. I had a Phil and Ted's but the out and about was also hugely popular round here (lots of countryside)

Peach1886 · 15/10/2018 20:32

Have pm'd you

mistermagpie · 15/10/2018 20:57

We have an out n about nipper sport. In fact, we have two! It has to be the sport one with the big wheels if you are taking it on the beach/forest/tracks/muddy field etc etc etc, the version with the small wheels is not the same thing at all.

Ours were purchased for running (I have two buggy aged children and both me and DH are runners) which they are great for, but they are actually worth their weight in gold for off road situations.

Someone said the handle was low which surprised me, it can be adjusted and I'm 5'8" while DH is over 6 foot and we both get on fine with it.

It's an ugly bastard though really, and no good for nipping on and off the bus or in and out of the newsagents but I've got a little buggy for those things and my older DS just walks.

newmumwithquestions · 15/10/2018 21:04

I had a Jane trider extreme. Really liked it. (Just about to sell it in case you’re in Hampshire?)
You can switch between a locked or swivelling front wheel depending if you want it for off road or not. The seat is higher than a lot which works well.

stiltonontoast · 16/10/2018 12:16

Thanks newmumwithquestions ! I'm in Bristol.

I loved my nipper 360. It was fantastic to push on any terrain, even managed to push my 14 yr old across a beach to save her beloved converse in it!
As pp said however it's fold wasn't great although DSIS had one and always used public transport,
