SIDS risk from new carpet?

Starlive23 · 11/10/2018 16:21

Anyone heard anything about this? I've just had a new carpet put in front room but am now worried about going in with 6mo DD. I didn't realise this was a SIDS risk until a friend mentioned it and looking online there seems to be some evidence backing it up.

I feel so stupid for not researching properly. Worst thing is we got new carpet so baby could crawl on it and not on old cold laminate.

Any advice anyone?

I've never ever heard of this.
I have heard that a lot of sids risks is just random.
My DD slept in every way possible that they recommend not doing.
If she's crawling properly I think she'll be fine, I imagine the "risk" is more to do with it being aired out and having good ventilation in the room and hoovered, maybe there are some loose fibres or something she could inhale?
But at that age they put everything in their mouths so it can't be much worse surely?

I think it's something to do with the chemicals that are released during the carpet installation and on the new carpet? Now I've read about it, there seems to be a bit of info on it, but HV nor MW ever mentioned it, I was oblivious

I had a carpet laid the day DD was born - booked weeks in advance, we didn’t have any issues at all. Really glad now I didn’t know it was SIDS risk and I too would have worried x

I wouldn't give this a second thought. Don't Google anymore.

Aprilislonggone · 11/10/2018 19:26

Surely you will be putting a sheet /blanket in the cot not a piece of carpet??

KitKatCHA · 11/10/2018 19:29

Never heard of this. If you're very anxious about it you could always get it professionally steam cleaned for peace of mind.

I've never heard of it. When our youngest child was 6 weeks old we moved house. The new place had bare boards in the passage, up the stairs and on the landing and had those really sharp carpet grippers along the floor near all the walls so we obviously had to have new carpet fitted as we had a toddler too. Noone ever mentioned any sids risk - the health visitor, the gp, the carpet fitter, friends and family members etc and it wasn't something that ever crossed my mind. That baby is 6 now and absolutely fine.

If you're worried, ask your mw, hv or gp and they'll either reassure you or advise you on what to do. Step away from google 'cos there's all sorts of shit on there and apparently everything is out to kill us.

Are you otherwise Ok? You're not feeling more anxious than normal? If you are, see your gp anyway to make sure this is not the start of something like post natal depression.

Starlive23 · 11/10/2018 20:24

@Aprilislonggone it's the front room carpet! Obviously we had a mattress and sheet on cot!

I'd never even thought to Google it before, it's just since she started crawling I thought we had better replace the horrible old laminate.

Thanks for replies, the logical part of me thinks it will be fine, but then the anxious part of me totally overreacts...

I’ve never heard of this. And your DD is 6 months so the risk of SIDS has dramatically dropped anyway. In the nicest possible way, you’re being overly anxious. Step away from google and if this isn’t a one off then speak to your health visitor as it could be PND.

INeedNewShoes · 11/10/2018 20:28

I had new carpet put in what is now DD's bedroom just before she was born. She ended up sleeping in my room until 15m but is now sleeping in her room. I wonder how long the 'new' effects go on for...?

Pebblespony · 11/10/2018 20:28

If the baby is six months and the carpet is not even in the room she's sleeping in, then l would say it's fine and you have nothing to worry about.

Starlive23 · 11/10/2018 20:34

Yes I think maybe I'm being overly anxious...I did mention to HV that I had been feeling very anxious but she just said it was to be expected. Hopefully the smell will go off in the front room and I will stop worrying!
