99.6 centile baby

Hey all!

Just wondering if there are any other parents to massive babies haha!

my DS was 9 pounds 6 when born and quickly climbed the centiles and has either been 99.6 or off the scale. DS is now 7 months 24 pounds and been in 9 to 12 month clothes since 6 months. Hes never been overly chubby just very long and will most likely be over 6 foot when hes grown.

one of the downsides im finding is he is outgrowing things so quickly! ( walker, bouncer, jumperoo, babybath, clothes etc) plus my back and arms are permanently killing me. I used to be a bit sensitive and annoy me when people act so shocked when I tell them his age as they think hes much older but now i just embrace it. I would never change him, he is my perfect little giant Grin

also if anyone has any tips to share on big babies? mine would be to try get things that do from babies to toddlers like this...

I have a big one! He was over 12 lb at birth. He's now 14 months and is probably about 32 lb now. He's lush! He seems to have slowed a bit now He's walking. He's in 12-18 clothes now but has been for months!

No tips, just enjoy the cuddles!

My DS is very tall. Comes from a tall family. He’s 3 now but could easily pass for 4 or even 5. I’m glad he’s healthy, but it is a bit annoying as we constantly get comments on his size and people assume he’s much older than he is (and therefore are disapproving of his normal toddler behavior)

Obviously I’d never change my little giant. And it does have some advantages - anything with a height restriction he’s usually big enough to do!

My youngest ds was 10lbs 14oz at birth and weighed 14lbs at his 6 week check Shock. The health visor had to measure his length twice because he was off the charts at 63cm long and she couldn't believe it lol. He is 8 weeks now and just moved up to 6-9 month clothes. Thankfully they are all hand me downs from his big brother so I don't feel to heart broken that he has outgrown everything so quickly. I still look at him to this day and wonder how the hell I grew and birthed him without so much as a graze lol.

Yes! both me and my husband are small - DH is only 5ft7 and I'm 5ft3 but somehow our son is huge!

He was 7.3lb at birth but now he's 8 months and 24lb, he's not even particularly chubby looking just very solid.

Sympathise with other posters with aching arms and back, carrying him up the stairs is the worst, and he's already over the weight limit for his jumperoo!

Is it true that bigger / heavier babies are slower to move I wonder? DS is currently trying to crawl.

pollysproggle · 13/10/2018 11:38

My two DC were 10.5lbs and just under 13lbs.
We're tall and slim and so are the kids. I don't think they ever had to wear clothes in the size up but I did cut the feet off their baby gros as they were so long!

Greywillow12 · 13/10/2018 14:00

My son was the same 10lbs 14 at birth and very long but me and his dad are tall. I remember people being shocked at his age when I told them. But he was great always ahead of the milestones. He's evened out now at 7 think he's the 50Th centile for weight and 75th for height.

So they do slow down 😅

SputnikBear · 13/10/2018 14:08

Mine was 10lb at birth and 20lb at 8 months. 80th centile for weight but 95th for height. I’ve resorted to cutting the feet off babygrows to make them last longer! Leggings are a good choice as they fit for a long time, they’re stretchy and socks can cover the ankles if they’re a bit short.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 14/10/2018 19:13

Both of our children have tracked at 99.6th centile for weight and height for first few years. DS has now dropped to about 75th (he's 4).
It's been expensive for everything, clothes shoes, baby equipment etc. DD is 2 and she's in 4-5 clothing and we've had a boy then girl so no reusing clothes etc. Totally worth it though! Sometimes people do mistake them for being older which can be difficult.

newroundhere · 14/10/2018 19:23

DS is off the chart in terms of percentiles - biggest tip from me would be not to buy the car seats that go up to 18kg with a harness. They're supposed to last til they're 4 apparently. We had to get a new one when DS turned 2 that goes up to 25kg with a harness.

Diorissimo1985 · 14/10/2018 19:29

DD was 9lbs9 at birth and stayed on 98th percentile - she's nearly 11 months now and still a chunky girl. Not especially tall apparently so I find leggings in size 12-18 fit her middle and I just roll the bottoms up currently ....
I sympathise with the back ache comments! I feel broken!!

Oct18mummy · 14/10/2018 19:29

My daughter was also on the highest percentile. The only negative was due to the fact they are tall, people think they are older and expect more from them. My daughter is 18 now and 6ft tall

drspouse · 14/10/2018 19:32

My DS wasn't huge but 75 th centile and some motor delay meant I was carrying a lump around for ages and knackered my back. Highly recommend Pilates, saved me from a lot of pain.

CornflakeMum · 14/10/2018 19:34

Yes, DS was 10lb 3 at birth and has consistently been 98th percentile.

Is that an Amazon referral link BTW? Wink

Fatted · 14/10/2018 19:39

Both my boys were big babies and are still tall now. 5YO is over 4 ft tall and could easily pass for older. 3YO is over 3 ft. I'm only 5 ft 1 Confused

When they were younger it was annoying because they were far too big for everything like walkers etc by the time they needed them. It didn't help they were late crawling and walking! When they were 2 I kept getting asked how old they were at places like the zoo where under 3's get in free. And don't even get me started on car seats!!

I've never known any different though. Big kids run in our family. My nephew was also a big baby and is tall now (although he's sorter than my eldest and a year older than him!)

Yep my DS is massive. Was on the 99th it whatever it is centile at birth and then went over. Haven’t had him weighed for months. He’s 15mo and in 2 year old clothing. He’s tall, broad. His dad is 6’3 and I’m 5’9 so he was never gonna be petite.

Tiptopj · 14/10/2018 21:41

My nearly 10 month old is on the 91st percentile for weight and 99th for length. I don't mean to hijack your thread OP but has anyone else with big babies found they seem to crawl a bit later than smaller babies? Mine short of rolls to where he wants but isn't even attempting to get on his knees yet and is no where near walking. I'm not going to stress about it as I'm sure he'll get there eventually but is there a correlation?

stiltonontoast · 15/10/2018 10:32

@Tiptopj I don't have any experience as my DS is only 8 months old but I've heard they are often later moving, especially if they are chilled babies as well.

My son is very very chilled and big but he's started getting up on his knees and hands and doing a kind of shuffle / army crawl. We don't expect him to be a quick crawler or walker.

Katiet123 · 15/10/2018 20:52

I don't think mine was particularly late with moving. I think it was 9 months for crawling and he started walking properly a month ago so at 13 months. Before that he was pulling up and cruising for a little while.
