Too young to say this?

I walked into the living room earlier to see my 6 year old playing with his willy, when I say "playing" it seemed quite grown up what he was doing so remembering discussions on here I said to him "can you go into your bedroom if you want to do that please" and he grinned and said "ok" (and stopped doing it).

I came away thinking maybe I shouldn't have said anything since he's only 6, what do you think? start as you mean to go on?

I think you did the right thing! It doesn't hurt to start as you mean to go on, and you didn't make him feel bad about it or overreact. Well done you.

6 yrs old though? they seem to be getting younger all the time. Bet they aren't, we just discuss it more openly these days.

i have told ds (now 4y8m) that it is something he should do in private, in his room, in bed etc. havent actually said anything about it recently, so i guess he has actually listened to something i have said, as i am sure he hasn't stopped playing with it.

no idea if what ds is doing is grown-up as I havent investigated in detail . Just the approach i have taken for any willy fiddling for about the last year.

DS1 is only 4 and is also willy obsessed. I'm trying not to say anything because i don't want to give him a complex about it so i just look away.

Again, drunkensailor, your approach also sounds perfectly fine. You're only telling her the truth, these things are only appropriate to do in the privacy of your own room. You haven't made her feel bad by the sound of things.
