OMG! 10m DS got knee stuck in cot bars! What can I do to stop this?

I'm still shaking! He's having his nap but he's just learnt to stand up so I keep having to go and help him back down, but the last time I went in his knee was totally wedged in the bars and I couldn't get it out! Obviously I did eventually but I was scared stiff of hurting him further (his leg looked a bit twisted).

How can I stop this happening? He's never had cot bumpers as I never saw the need but do you think I should get some now? Or what else can I do?

try blooming marvellous or the like, they ahve a kind of soft net/mesh that you can attach/weave through the bars to stop this happening.

Not to alarm you, but my dnephew managed to break his leg once by wedging it in the bars of his cot. So definitely worth trying to sort it. The other suggestion I would make would be a gro-bag or other sleeping bag?

bohemianbint · 13/06/2007 13:01

Oh my god, how awful! Will try mesh stuff, have stopped putting him in gro bags for the time being because it's so hot in his room. Well, that's my mission for the afternoon!

Don't be buying mesh things that will cost you money, just get the blankets that he won't be using in this hot weather and weave that through, thats what we did and it worked just fine.

Brilliant, will give it a whirl. I had no idea this could happen. Shouldn't they make the bars closer together or sommat?!

my dd2 used to do this all the time - she would scream blue murder and I would panic. I think she grew out of it after a while tho- or maybe her legs got less chubby.

PinkTulips · 13/06/2007 13:22

dd still does this every now and again.

it's never occured to me to do much about it beyond freeing her and kissing it better!

oliveoil · 13/06/2007 13:24

mine did this

get a v thin grow bag, like cotton sheet

once, dd1 had her arms through one side and her legs through the other, how she was still asleep I have no idea!

bohemianbint · 13/06/2007 13:24

I seriously couldn't get his knee out for a good few minutes and was starting to get a bit panicky...

baby oil next time

or olive oil etc

flibbertyjibbet · 13/06/2007 13:29

If the bars were closer together they'd just get their arms or feet stuck.... or something, just to worry their mothers....

OonaghBhuna · 13/06/2007 15:16

is your cot a new cot? safety standards change over the years. we were offered a cot from my sister but it was old and the bars were tt far apart. we checked it out on the web cause we were worried about dd head getting stuck.we ended up buying a new one!!!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 13/06/2007 15:19

Once my DS got old enough to do this we used a travel cot with a cot mattress on the bottom.

wizadora · 13/06/2007 21:36

my 9m dd does this too.shes a nightmare to get to bed now as insists on standing up even though shes exhausted.she will then get her leg/knee stuck in between the bars when she sits down again.our cot is a new one.i thought about the bumper idea but read that when they get to the moving around stage you shouldnt use them for safety reasons?

bohemianbint · 14/06/2007 12:43

Yeah, I thought he should be outgrowing cot bumpers (not that I ever bothered with them!) I put him in a grobag last night as I figured being too hot beats broken legs every time. Have also weaved blankets through the bars so hopefully he won't do it again! I wish he'd just go to sleep!
