Formula change??

Is it necessary to change to follow on milk? DD is now 7 months, and HV said she can stay on the number 1 milk til she's 1 year. Others have said to switch her to stage 2 follow on milk. What's the difference?? Except the price 🙄

I think very little! From what i understand follow on milk was invented as a way of getting around the marketing code for formula. They can’t promote milk for under 6 month olds but can for 6months plus, so that’s how they get their advertising!

Yeah I thought that too. Looking on it, just seems to have slightly more iron in the follow on! The only reason I asked, the follow on can sometimes be on offer, ie, 2 for £18 and stuff. Which is a money saver, but not sure if it's worth it to change her milk just for that reason.

No price diff for me- but decided to use follow on simply because it has more iron and babies iron requirements go up after 6 months

You also get boots points on follow up so for us with twins at their peak it was working out at a free yup every 3rd week...worth paying the 3p more in boots!

Did any of you have any issues with changing to follow on with the babies? Did they seem like it tasted different or not take to it very well?

I changed my daughter from stage 1 to follow on (Hipp milk) at 6 months. Straight switch from one to the other, not phased. No problems at all.

Main reason for switching was cost and also boots advantage card points (stocked up on 3 months of formula and nappies at once, when a points offer was on - was getting something like 35 points per pound spent).

No not at all and baby didn’t take the transition from b milk to formula very well/ made him quite sicky. Found a formula that he was okay with and stayed in same brand for follow on

Also used hipp

The iron thing is a myth. This is directly copied from the first steps nutrition review of infant formula. The whole thing is over 200 pages long!

There is some evidence to suggest that excessive iron intakes in infancy may result in a reduced uptake of other trace metals, and the oxidation of lipids, and that high iron intakes among iron-replete infants and toddlers may actually have an adverse effect on growth and development. Follow-on formula currently contain higher amounts of iron than recommended, and two to three times more than the new EFSA (2014) scientific opinion suggests as the target value.
