DS constantly talks in weird voices

My DS has just turned 12, and 90% of the time uses weird voices. He uses his normal voice when he’s telling me facts or if he’s in trouble, but other than that he will uses different voices/different accents etc.
I can put up with it mostly but sometimes it just REALLY irks me and I give him warnings but it’s like he just forgets or can’t help himself.

Does anybody else’s child do this, or am I just THIS lucky? Confused Grin

Why is it a problem? He's probably just entertaining himself

FranticallyPeaceful · 03/10/2018 15:30

Because it’s constant and i was wondering if it’s normal.
Sorry I’m not a perfect mother and it really frigging does my head in after years of him doing it

They do outgrow it, it's a kind of play. Bloody infuriating though. Just ask him to repeat stuff in a normal voice if he wants you to listen. And maybe sign him up for a theatre course in case he's going to turn into the next Tom Hardy?

Tell him you can't hear him / aren't listening unless he speaks in his normal voice ?

eddiemairswife · 03/10/2018 15:46

I think it's a thing boys do. I'm old enough to remember when The Goon Show was on the wireless, and there were endless male imitators.(including Prince Charles).

Hashbrownsandbeans · 03/10/2018 21:43

Are you worried about any other aspects of his development? Using unusual accents/voices is very common in Autism Spectrum disorders. However, if your son has friends and doesn’t seem to struggle with other aspects of social interaction and communication, and doesn’t have difficulties with restricted interests or changes of routine, then it’s probably just a phase.

DuggeesWoggle · 03/10/2018 21:45

My brother was like this - weird noises to accompany the voices, always had to be making a noise of some description.

He's 40 now and heavily into am dram. You have been warned!!

ourkidmolly · 03/10/2018 21:48

Really 90%? That would massively annoy me too. 5 minutes yes, all night no.

ChicagoLil · 03/10/2018 22:04

My 11yo does this. I thought he was mucking about because I do the same to him. He's having a laff, unless he sounds like the spawn of the devil

HotSauceCommittee · 03/10/2018 22:07

My fifteen year old had an Australian accent as often as he remembered to do it on our two weeks holiday this year Grin The more we berated him, the more he did it. I can laugh about it now.

Ohyesiam · 03/10/2018 22:09

Dd 14 does a “ comedy”Oz accent most of the time.
Oh how we laugh

CottonSock · 03/10/2018 22:10

That would drive me mad!

HotSauceCommittee · 03/10/2018 22:32

@OhyesIam we should get your DD and my DS together. They deserve one another !

Ohyesiam · 03/10/2018 22:34

@hotsauce Yes, they could spend all night saying “ gazebo” and laughing....

rubyroot · 04/10/2018 00:45

However, if your son has friends

Really?

I know this is well intentioned, but many kids with autism have friends!

Haireverywhere · 04/10/2018 00:48

I think that post was meant to a list of pointers to be taken together in context as any of them alone mean nothing.

90% of the time would grate on me too!

DuggeesWoggle · 04/10/2018 10:42

It's not an isolated phenomenon Grin

In all seriousness though I wonder if it's an attempt (probably subconsciously) to try and mitigate the awkwardness of pre/pubescent hormones that are raging at that age - be someone else, be anyone but yourself. Don't be serious at any point, if you're just messing around you're less vulnerable to being made a fool of. Maybe. My terrible psychology!!

Doesn't make it any less annoying though!
