Gripe water and constipation

Hi all,

This is my first post on here so bear with me!

I have been giving my DS gripe water for his colic symptoms but he seems to have become constipated. Is it possible that the gripe has caused this? I breastfeed and my DS is two months today

Thanks

Sorry to hear that your baby has Colic Thanny. Have you ruled out the usual causes like Tongue Tie or Cows Milk Protein Allergy?

How old is your baby? Do you breastfeed? It could be that your baby is sensitive to something youve had in your diet.
Also, are you sure he's constipated? It's usual for babies poops to become less regular as they get older (up to around a week). It's said its only constipation if the poops are small and hard when he does eventually go (like rabbit droppings).
I've not heard of gripe water causing constipation.

I’ve always used gripe water to treat constipation. By constipated, do you mean hard poos? Or just not going as often? Both of mine only ever went about every 5 days but poos were soft (usually gave gripe water if they didn’t go after that and seemed uncomfortable). Unless poo is hard pellets, you don’t usually have to worry too much as long as baby is gaining weight and having lots of wet nappies.

Hi all,

@JiltedJohnsJulie @FTMF30 @mindutopia

Long story short, I have assumed it's constipation because he hasn't gone for a turd in about 36 hours. I'm not too sure really what it is.

Yesterday evening he was screaming the house down, his face was red and his legs and tummy were tensing up so much. I could only imagine he was trying to poo. He reached a point where he basically wore himself out and fell asleep

I have tried mixing my diet up a bit. I'm a vegetarian who occasionally cheats and eats the odd bit of chicken. I was concerned that perhaps maybe it was beans in my diet that caused it? I haven't had beans since Saturday and he still just appears to want to push something out

Thanks for your advice guys, anything further would be great!

Usually if they are constipated there are lots of smelly trumps and the stools are hard rather than soft. Is he trumping lots? Is his tummy swollen and has he pooped yet?

Sorry forgot to say, some BF babies can go a lot less often, upto 2 weeks at this age without causing concern. How often has he been going up to now?

How old is he? Unless he's newborn, I'd give him at least a week before worrying.

If there's still nothing, give him a tiny bit of cooled boiled water (no more than 30ml is what my HV said). That did the trick when my LO was constipated.
