4 week old windy baby

My baby boy is 4 weeks old and has been feeding great on SMA. However in the last week he started getting cramps after some bottles so we have been giving him infacol before his bottles and it seems to be helping. He burps a lot during feeds so bringing up wind is not an issue.

However he farts constantly. Sometimes it doesn’t seem to bother him, but a lot of the time is does seem to hurt him. He’ll be sleeping and suddenly start roaring and by the time I get to him I hear him fart, and he will instantly stop crying.

He was sleeping today, but started crying and when I lifted him he burped, and then farted 6 times. Therefore all the wind is interrupting his sleep which makes him unsettled.

Is he just a windy baby or should I look at changing his milk? I was looking at cow and gate comfort.

Sorry I should add there’s no problem with dirty nappies.

We have exactly the same issue m with our 4 week old. Infacol works slightly but still having issues! And she still burps fine after feeds like you say. Our girl is now being investigated for lactose intolerance. We’ve also been given gaviscon to see if that works (she had to be over 8lb for that aparently and she just was!)

Maybe worth bobbing her to the docs. You never know - they can either tell you there’s not much else you can do or give you something to try :)

My DS was like this, he was very hard to get wind out of which resulted in lots of farting and sometimes a painful tummy for him. All the Gps' I spoke to said 'colic' Hmm and weren't very helpful. We decided to try another milk and eventually found he actually got on best with anti reflux milk, although reflux was never diagnosed.

I'd suggest trying one of the thicker varieties of milk such as comfort milk - this settles easier in their little stomachs and is easier to digest. You may need to go up a teat size for it though as its too thick to get through a size 1 teat. I'd try a 3.

My DD is 19 weeks and suffered terribly with gas.... still does at time now. We moved to HiPP Organic infancy milk and it definitely improved things, that and some baby massage at every nappy chance - oh and a Bath before bed, relaxes tummy muscles and gets them trumping!! Smile

My Bubba was like this, getting really painful tummy and wriggling in feeding, turned out to be a milk protein intolerance, his little tummy just couldn't take it :-( we're on neocate now with no probs x
