How to get away with not buying a double buggy?

Hi all. Recently found out I'm pregnant (6 weeks ish) and have decided to go ahead with it after much thought. After a lot of thinking I've come to this dilemma - I've got a baby of 9 months already, so I guess she will be 17 months ish when my second child is born (may). How can I get away without buying a double buggy? On one hand I don't have a spare grand to get a new pram and on the other hand I just don't think I really like them that much. Is my little one too small to go on a buggy board ? The longest trips we do are a few hours shopping etc and I do drive so we don't have to travel far IE on the bus/train. Any other options? My pram from my first baby is in perfectly good condition as I only used it for a few months then got a light weight stroller.
Thanks for any thoughts!

Yes get a sling

Sugarplumdinosaur · 01/10/2018 14:06

Wear the baby in a sling and use the stroller for your toddler could be one option?

NoNoCharlieRascal · 01/10/2018 14:08

Sling and buggy or buy second hand and don't spend £££££. I have a perfectly good second hand City Mini double which cost £75 from ebay. Got a carry cot in a separate auction, new mattress and jobs a good'n.

I have a 17 month age gap too. We used sling initially then moved to buggy board once dd1 was a bit older (dd1 didnt walk until a few weeks before dd2 was born so wouldn't have been ready for a buggy board straight away).

TokyoSushi · 01/10/2018 14:09

honestly, I'd say get one, even if it's second hand from eBay. I found with mine, even though the oldest didn't always necessarily need to be in the buggy it was a perfect place to put them both when you were trying to do something quickly. Toddlers have a habit of running off, making things hard work and sometimes having them both strapped down just for a few minutes whilst you were in a shop or wherever was so helpful. Managing a toddler 'on the loose' and a pram is hard work, especially near roads and I'd expect your eldest DC will definitely be at that stage when you have the baby.

Also, if you need a few minutes peace, a good walk with them both in the buggy is a sanity saver!

my double pram wasnt a grand it was 125 online a joie air double its a stroller type but suitable from birth i used it from birth no problems i just used the headhugger thing from the car seat with it to make it more comfy.

I was so sad to see it go it was the best pram i ever had.

Racecardriver · 01/10/2018 14:10

Baby sling then buggy board.

ifoundthebread · 01/10/2018 14:10

It was around that age I stopped using a Stroller for my dd but she was a single and not a runner, so that made things easier. I also had all the time in the world to kill, so walking around at toddler speed didn't bother me and if I did need to rush then I'd just put her on my hip, suppose you could do the same for short periods

lornathewizzard · 01/10/2018 14:17

We have a 2 year gap and now baby is 2 we have only just stopped using the double.

We got a great condition Phil and teds for £200 and then a reasonable condition double city jogger for £100. Absolutely no need to spend a fortune new

lornathewizzard · 01/10/2018 14:18

Meant to actually say the main benefit of the double pram is having somewhere safe to contain them. Either when you need to get somewhere quickly or you actually wanna get something done or wander round the ships

lornathewizzard · 01/10/2018 14:18

*shops obviously

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 01/10/2018 14:20

Similar age gap here and we didn’t have a double buggy. DC1 was a good Walker and hated pranks anyway, so I had a sling and one of those little life backpack things, or if it was too far for her to walk, DC1 got stuffed in the buggy and I put the baby in the sling.

To be honest we didn’t use the buggy much at all - we don’t use public transport, and the village we live in is small enough to walk round. It was fine.

InDubiousBattle · 01/10/2018 14:24

We paid £80 for our second hand Phil and Teds. It would have been worth 10 times that to us! We have a 19 month gap but I don't drive and we love going for long walks so when the kids were tiny we needed a double. I did use a sling but we enjoyed many lunches with both dc asleep in the buggy. Still use the Phil and Teds as a single occasionally for dd (30if she's too knackered to do the school run.

InDubiousBattle · 01/10/2018 14:25

Dd is 3, not 30!!

MollyHuaCha · 01/10/2018 14:26

Similar are gap here. I didn't use the double pushchair a lot, BUT I could not have managed without it on the occasions I did use it. I would advise you to buy a cheap new or second hand one. I sold ours when oldest was 2yrs 2 months.

Namechanger55555 · 01/10/2018 14:36

I have the same age gap. And my DS1 was way too tiny to not have his own seat in the pram. He gets tired and there is no way he would be controlled enough to sit/stand on a buggy board! Grin (he is only young so he wouldn't have understood that he needs to sit there and keep still for a long time.)

Mountain buggy nano duo is fab, cheap (ish), light and small. And I think it looks nice.

PavlovaFaith · 01/10/2018 14:38

Paid £200 for a used Phil and teds. We could have spent less. Why waste £1000?

ArfArfBarf · 01/10/2018 14:42

I’d get a secondhand one. You can do without and use a sling but when you’ve essentially got two babies, the joy of walking both to sleep and enjoying a quite coffee with no one touching you is priceless.

3stonedown · 01/10/2018 14:48

I'd say that age difference a double would make your life a lot easier. I'd buy second hand, I saw a phil and teds double on marketplace for £50 yesterday. You can go back to your single when your eldest is a bit older.

pocketdoor · 01/10/2018 14:48

I'm still using my double for my nearly 3yr old and 18m old! It's been invaluable to me but I don't drive so walk loads, and my toddler is a massive dawdler. Also slings do my head in.

mamalovesviolet · 01/10/2018 15:01

I got an out n about double off eBay with a baby carrycot. My age gap was 2 years 2 months and my first was not a reliable walker back then. She also wasn't great at staying on a buggy board. I did do sling and single buggy as well but there were quite a few occasions when the double was invaluable. For double naps and a sit down for me. For rushing around to Nursery. And basically not getting into a sweaty mess wearing the baby. We still use it occasionally now and she's 3 this month. So for us circa £300 was worth it. I sold the carrycot on eBay for nearly the same price I bought it as well.

Serafinaaa · 01/10/2018 16:09

Still use my double with a 3.5 year old and almost 2 year old. Sometimes it's just necessary. I can't carry my youngest in a sling anymore. She's just too heavy! I paid £175 on gumtree for an oyster max.

0lgaDaPolga · 01/10/2018 19:28

I would sell your first pram and get a second hand double to be honest. I’m going to have an 18 month gap. My son is 16 months and only started walking last week so nowhere near able to walk any reasonable distance without the pram. I guess it depends on how well your daughter can walk at that age but I think 17m is very little to not have a pram

DollyDayScream · 01/10/2018 19:37

Sling for baby and stroller for toddler. Then upgrade to a buggy board or similar when the baby gets too heavy/active for the sling.

Popsicales · 02/10/2018 20:14

I’ve got a 13 month gap. I would get a double if I were you, makes leaving the house so much easier. I’ve got the Joie aire twin and it’s so much better than my bugaboo. I love it and it was only £120.

My DS is 17 months now. He walks good but gets tired quickly. He doesn’t like to walk in the direction I want him to and he chucks himself backwards and tantrums. I wouldn’t be able to manage the two of them without my double!
