Nappy Rash Help?

Hi all...1st time posting on here...I'm really really struggling with nappy rash - we just can't seem to ever get on top of it. It started pretty early on for us - about 2 days in she started getting a red bum so we started with mild barrier creams. Within weeks we had worked our way through pretty much all of them. By 3 weeks we were in the doctors and had canesten prescribed - this started to work but stopped again. It then got really bad last week and she was bleeding again from her sores so we went back to the docs and this time we have a steroid cream. Again same story it started working and it's stopped again and it's flared up...! She's out of her nappies more than in them, and we use cotton wool and water when changing and if we have to use wipes - just water wipes. Her milk is Aldi mamia and mamia nappies...could this be anything?? It's not her wee that's causing the problem - it seems to be her poo...any help or suggestions would be much appreciated ahead of our next doctors appointment this week...😔

We had this when my boy was newborn and it is so horrible. I really feel for you. I ebf so can't comment on the milk BUT I know that my son's nappy rash started when I went on antibiotics (that went through in my milk slightly) so it could be diet related I guess. Obviously not exactly the same sort of thing but maybe worth a try to change it?! I've always heard the Aldi nappies are brilliant though so can't see how it could be that?! Apart from that I think it sounds like you're doing everything you can.

I really hope it clears up soon, eventually for no apparent reason after weeks of trying no nappy time, barrier creams, meds from the Dr it suddenly got better for my boy and I really hope it does for your LO too :-)

Have you tried metanium cream (hopefully that’s spelt right) it’s yellow and gross smelling but worked really well on mine. You put on very thinly. There is one to treat the rash and one to prevent it.

Try orabase. It's not actually for nappy rash but you can buy it over the counter. The nurses gave it to us when ds was a neonate. It's like crystal gel, you dab it on, not rub and leave it making sure you don't try and scrap it off when you change them. It creates like a second skin. It's always worked for my ds even when he's had open sores.

My little boy has this and every cream, etc was tried, he was so sore. The only thing that helped was switching nappy brands! My daughter always had pampers so that's what we put him in, I was recommended to try a supermarket brand instead and we tried Asda's little angels. The nappy rash cleared up in 2 days! I know this may not work for your little one, but might be worth a try, good luck xx

Literally just posted this on another thread.

Could this be thrush/fungal ingestion

My post below

This happened to me. Also at my wits end. Was a result of strong antibiotics for me after I retained my placenta. Sudocreme will not work.

In the end what worked was a four part solution.

Are you breast feeding? If so:
Treat thrush in you (oral tablet (fine while breast feeding) with topical nipple cream

Treat thrush on him with topical cream

BUT as it's bleeding also needs hydrocortisone (you can be prescribed canisten-h cream

Metanium cream, which is a much better barrier than sudacreme to keep poo and wee off it.

My boy's tiny hum was bare flesh. It was awful. This sorted it.

Good luck!!

My first got nappy rash very early on, also after I'd had antibiotics. I think it was the poo rather than the urine causing the problem. She always did a lot of poos, and it was an ongoing problem until she started weaning and pooing less. I hope you find a solution. I would agree with previous posters that metanium is the best barrier cream.

Thank you all for the comments...sadly we've tried everything you've all mentioned to no avail and still a very unhappy baby. Last week the sores were so bad I went to A&E and they prescribed antibiotics & more steroid cream....again we followed the same cycle - getting better then flared up even worse. We've been back again to the docs, had swabs but that found nothing and we finally have an appointment with a paediatrician in a couple of weeks. The doctors thinks she has an intolerance and has put us back on lactose free milk - but isn't convinced she is lactose intolerant as she's still getting the rash - just not as bad....

It's exhausting to be honest and soul destroying - she's so happy when she's not got a flare up then we get a flare up & become house bound (nappy free time) and miserable...let's hope the next doctor can help...

This is what we were advised by a dermatologist (called in because d's was in hospital when his was really bad).

At nappy change time just use cotton wool and water. If child is extremely dirty a tiny bit of baby bath stuff is ok but rinse off with plain water.

Dry really well - if child will tolerate it, use a hairdryer on a cool setting.

Apply prescribed cream - let it dry or use hairdryer again

Then apply a layer of something like metanium over the top so that the prescribed cream doesn't rub off or get washed off if dc does a wee

Minds wouldn't tolerate the hairdryer so we just dried with cotton wool.

HTH
