What do you think of baby bonnets

In my local area it seems that knitted baby bonnets on babies are no longer very popular, having asked on other forums I have got mixed responses so wanted to see the thoughts of everyone here, do you like baby bonnets/would you put them on your babies or have you put them on your babies? Also do you see them around your local area? Thanks for your thoughts

What’s the point of them? Hasn’t occurred to me to get a bonnet tbh.

anotherangel2 · 25/09/2018 22:13

They only need a hat if is actually cold otherwise they are in danger of over heating and having a sezuire.

LoniceraJaponica · 25/09/2018 22:14

"What’s the point of them?"

To keep a baby's head warm in cold weather. I think babies look cute on bonnets.

They look cute but I never found much of an excuse to use the ones I had. Once they had even rudimentary hand control they removed them and before that I really cbf with dressing them up or anything, just put them in a baby grow and then a bonnet seemed a bit overdressed in comparison.

LittleLives1 · 25/09/2018 22:26

I would never use them inside lol, they are the same as any other hat

I’d just stick a hat on. Baby bonnets can look a bit naff/old fashioned - ugly yarn colours, normally acrylic/nylon, overly fussy patterns.

Nothisispatrick · 25/09/2018 22:29

Soooo... a hat?

RoseAndRose · 25/09/2018 22:34

Yes, a baby bonnet is a type of hat (mildly surprised that needed spelling out)

Some are hideous, some are not. And babies do need a head covering in inclement weather. Whether it's a bonnet is just personal taste (possibly related tomwhether you have any knitters in your circle)

Nothisispatrick · 25/09/2018 22:38

I know what a bonnet is. I just didn’t know ‘baby bonnets’ were a thing (maybe in Victorian times). Why would you not just have a hat? What is the point in comparison to a hat is what I meant, is it just a fashion thing?

Newbiecat · 25/09/2018 22:40

Honestly?! Sorry, I think they’re a bit chav

... ducks for cover 😳

LittleLives1 · 25/09/2018 22:41

Baby bonnets have been ‘a thing’ for a long time yes but I wore them! They aren’t that old, plus bonnets are (sometimes, I do agree you get ugly ones) prettier, more girly and also tighter to the head and face helping keep heat in

greendale17 · 25/09/2018 22:43

Not chavvy at all

I think they are cute

LittleLives1 · 25/09/2018 22:44

Think ‘chavy’ depends on what you are picturing, I don’t like fur trims and sparkles but I think a lot of people think that is all a baby bonnet is, most aren’t this way

I quite like them as they don’t drop over my baby’s eyes when she’s in the pram or carrier.

LoniceraJaponica · 25/09/2018 22:47

"Honestly?! Sorry, I think they’re a bit chav "

Chavs didn't exist when I wore them in 1959. You don't see babies wearing them these days. I think they are old fashioned and cute.

Now, hairbands on babies, especially bald ones....

PlatypusPie · 25/09/2018 22:47

Not Victorian times - knitted bonnets, with ribbon ties were what you dressed your baby in ( often with with matching jackets) until at least the 90s ( that would be the 1990s, not 1890s) . Then came the wonders of soft, stretchy cotton blend jersey hats that stayed on for at least a while and suddenly no one needed lacy knit bonnets any more ( didn’t stop my MIL churning them out, alway too small )

Waterlemon · 25/09/2018 22:50

I think the ribbon being a safety risk is what puts parents off bonnets these days.

LittleLives1 · 25/09/2018 22:50

It’s knitted bonnets I’m talking about, never used material ones and not sure I like the look of them (I wore knitted ones in the late 90’s)

My MIL occasionally put the knitting needles down and made beautifully tucked, broiderie anglause trimmed cotton lawn summer bonnets for my DDs, which did look very cute, if a bit Little House on the Prairie. She lived in another country so we dutifully took and sent photos, before the girls inevitably managed to get them off ! She had four strapping sons and all grandsons before our girls so enjoyed making delicate things for them.

PlatypusPie · 25/09/2018 22:58

Anglaise

affectionincoldclimate · 25/09/2018 23:06

Depends what bonnet. There is this amazing baby clothes designer who makes the most gorgeous bonnets for kids and DD has a summer one with a peak (incredibly practical) and a winter one in tartan lined with fleece. No garish nonsense. No polyester. Just old fashioned lovely design that you can tie under the chin to keep it in place.

Depends on the bonnet. I've seen some cute colourful jersey/wool ones with pixie points
I've also seen hideous ones with lace, diamanté and faux fur.

Nightmanagerfan · 25/09/2018 23:10

There seems to be a recent trend for knitted bonnets with ties under the chin in high end fashion brands for babies. What I find really concerning is how many of these brands show adverts of sleeping babies wearing them when it’s a known risk factor for cot death through overheating. I have commented on some Instagram posts (linking lullaby trust guidelines) but not sure how seriously they take it.

aidelmaidel · 25/09/2018 23:13

I've found them much better than round hats because round hats slip down over the face when baby is in pram, buggy, or carrier. Bonnets are the right shape for the face to stay uncovered. DD has lots and they're cute and she can see out.

Verbena87 · 26/09/2018 07:37

I knitted my baby a sort of pixie hood bonnet that buttons under his chin with leftover cashmere/merino blend yarn. It stays on, is warm not itchy, and looks so cute it makes me want to eat him up.

(Measure baby’s head. Cast on enough stitches to fit from jaw to jaw, knit til it’s long enough to go from forehead to crown, fold in half and Kitchener stitch the back together. Pick up and knit ribbed button band round the front, with a little extra bit to go under their chin. Yarn over buttonhole at the end. Sew on button. Put on baby. Loose the plot at adorable-ness)
